According to Adrian Wojnarowski, it’s official: Boston and Brooklyn have agreed in principle to a deal that’ll send Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Jason Terry to Brooklyn in exchange for a package surrounding Gerald Wallace, Kris Joseph, Tornike Shengelia, the expiring deal of Kris Humphries and three future first-round picks (2014, ’16 and ’18) to the Celtics, as well as the option to swap picks in ’17. Boston will also receive Reggie Evans and then Keith Bogans through a sign-n-trade.
The trade couldn’t go down until Garnett waived his no-trade clause, which he did once the Nets agreed to guarantee the $12 million owed him for the 2014-15 season.
For Boston, the allure was obvious: get some first-round picks and rid themselves of a couple of large contracts. The Celtics are now firmly Rajon Rondo‘s team, and are in a direct rebuilding stage. Back in the day, Danny Ainge stockpiled draft picks and young talent, and eventually turned that all in to get KG. He’s probably planning to do something similar again.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn is ALL IN to win now. With a starting lineup of Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Brook Lopez, they’ll should be a dangerous out for anyone in the Eastern Conference Playoffs.
