And all over California, a loud record scratch was heard. Yahoo’s Marc J. Spears broke the story:

The Golden State Warriors and restricted free-agent forward Draymond Green have broken off contract talks, a source told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday.

The Warriors met with Green and agent B.J. Armstrong in Los Angeles after 12:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday when NBA free agents could first begin negotiating with teams, a source told Yahoo Sports. The Warriors were given the first opportunity to reach a contract agreement before Green considered talking with other teams. But with the breakdown in talks, Green is now open to meeting with other franchises immediately, the source said.

The rush to schedule a meeting with Draymond will certainly be a mad one. Pray for the cell phone of B.J. Armstrong, Dray’s agent. At 25 and coming off his rookie deal, Green is still a restricted free agent, meaning whatever the market throws at him can be matched by the 2015 NBA champs.

It’s likely Draymond fully expects a max contract (and a loud section of NBA Twitter agrees with him), and that the Warriors, still working on moving David Lee, started by asking Dray to take a pay cut to make it easier on them. If he thinks he can get the max, someone will probably give it to him. There aren’t many championship-caliber four’s who can do all the things Draymond can.

The odds are still favor Golden State bringing Draymond back, simply because they’d be fools not to. He was an integral part of their first championship in 40 years and we’ve all seen what happens when you break up the nucleus of a title winner (i.e. the 2011-12 Mavs).

But the eyebrows of executives around the NBA have been collectively raised, even if it’s all for naught in the end.
