Here Are The New Orleans Pelicans’ Revived Mardi Gras Uniforms…With Sleeves

The New Orleans Pelicans are adding their second alternate jersey since their rebrand from the Hornets. Last season, they added a vibrant red alternate uniform, which they used as both a home and away jersey. This season they will reintroduce their Mardi Gras uniform, inspired by the espirit de corps surrounding Shrove Tuesday. The purple, green and yellow color scheme is a retread of one they wore from 2010 to 2013, but this time they’ll come with the dreaded sleeves. Aesthetically speaking, the festive combo of colors with the font choice isn’t the most pleasant on the eyes, but they’re a fun representation of the annual festival every spring (perhaps it’ll coincide with a deep Pellies playoff run?).

In an interview with NBA.com, Pelicans equipment coordinator David Jovanovic broke down what the players enjoy about the Mardi Gras jerseys and their feelings on sleeves — the most maligned component of contemporary jerseys.

The uniqueness of them. A lot of players want to wear something different that’s a change (from what they usually wear). I think different uniforms add a little spice to the event.

For the players, it’s a feel thing. For some of the young guys, it might not be any adjustment, because they’re used to maybe wearing this in college or AAU. For some of the older players, it may be a little different. But most of the guys wear T-shirts in practice, so it’s not that big of a deal.

Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday, Ryan Anderson and Quincy Pondexter sported the brand new uniform at a team event this afternoon.

The Brow Mardi Gras jersey should be a staple in the New Orleans area for years to come.
