The University of Kentucky took on the University of North Carolina on Sunday night in Lexington’s Rupp Arena, but it wasn’t an early midnight-madness college love-fest, but an inter-college alumni game with more tired countenances and lazy alley-oops.
But the past college stars showed up to play, most notably former Tar Heel and 2015 NBA Champion with the Golden State Warriors, Harrison Barnes, who poured in a game-high 39 points, despite Kentucky leading by as much as 21 at one point and coasting to a 122-115 win.
Barnes did get to meet the No. 6 pick in the draft, Willie Cauley-Stein, who proved that defense really does happen sometimes in these alumni games.
Cauley-Stein and new Kings teammate DeMarcus Cousins connected on a couple of plays — DMC lead the Kentucky squad with 33 points — but it was his rejection of Barnes that got the biggest cheers from the obviously pro-Kentucky crowd.
