The San Antonio Spurs’ Newest HEB Commercials Are Absolutely Delightful

The true measure of how well LaMarcus Aldridge fit in with the San Antonio Spurs was never going to be how many points he scored, how well he defended, or how many rings the Spurs won. No, the only way to gauge Aldridge’s success with the Spurs is how he performs in the HEB commercials. While it’s early, the results are pretty promising.

The HEB commercials might actually be the eighth wonder of the world. On the court and with the media, the Spurs are notoriously stoic, rarely betraying emotion or giving anything more than rote, mundane answers to questions. There’s an exception every now and then, but for the most part, thinking you’ll learn something from a Spurs interview is a hopeless endeavor. Once the HEB cameras hit, though, the team completely transforms.

We almost never get to see Tim Duncan’s sense of humor firsthand, but there he is, being funny! There’s Kawhi Leonard, speaking actual whole sentences (it’s also wonderful how they’ve turned Leonard into a bit of a dolt for these spots)!

We owe a great debt to HEB and their creative/marketing team. Without them, we would never see Leonard put on a normal-sized glove, hear Aldridge say “gotta protect,” or realize that the Spurs, often thought to be robots, are in fact human.
