Al Horford Says He ‘Really Considered’ Going To The Rockets In Free Agency

Al Horford was one of the biggest targets for numerous teams during free agency last summer. After taking several meetings, including one with his incumbent Hawks, the All-Star forward ultimately decided to join the Boston Celtics. But it apparently wasn’t an easy decision.

Horford recently told Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe that he almost signed with the Houston Rockets instead:

“I really considered coming here as well,” he said of Houston. “Them and Boston and Washington, but especially here and Boston, were probably the two teams I was really, really looking at.

“So, just a lot to consider. A really good team, but at the end of the day I just felt like I was better off being in Boston.”

It would’ve been a major coup for the Rockets, who have mostly struck out on all the big-name free agents the past several years. Horford’s ability to stretch the floor would’ve been a great match in the front court alongside Clint Capela, a defensive-minded player with a limited offensive skill-set.

Instead, Horford is shoring up a Celtics team that is looking to challenge the Cavs for East supremacy. He missed a big chunk of time with an injury to start the season, but he’s getting back on track now as he’s averaging 14.9 points and 6.5 rebound per game on better than 50 percent shooting from the field, including over 41 percent from downtown.
