Andre Drummond Says He Wants Draymond Green On His Team, But It’s Not Happening

This summer, Draymond Green will be a restricted free agent. The undersized Warriors forward listed at 6’7, but closer to 6’5, has had a breakout year on the best team in the NBA. We’ve got him as our Defensive Player of the Year, and it’s clear the everyman for the Dubs can do a ton of different things to help a team win.

He’s had a 20-rebound game, a 13-assist game, a 31-point game, a five-block game, and a few five-plus steal games. Overall, there aren’t many players his size who can guard four different positions, snag a rebound over a big man, sprint up the court on the fast break and either dish for the assist or finish it himself. After all he’s done for the Dubs, Green will be extended a max offer by a few teams this summer in restricted free agency.

But coach Steve Kerr wants him around long-term and owner Joe Lacob has said he’s willing to dip into the luxury tax to keep this group together. They’ll have to in order to match a deal for Dray this summer.

Consequently, Andre Drummond’s tweet late last night that he wants Draymond Green on his team, the Pistons, is just something he wants, not something he’s likely to get.

We know Pistons GM/coach Stan Van Gundy wants him, too, but the Pistons are unlikely to persuade him to leave a Warriors team perfectly constructed to get the most out of Green’s unique abilities. Not to mention the fact the Warriors are the best team in the NBA entering the 2015 Playoffs.

The Pistons have a lot of wiggle room in free agency this summer with less than $30 million in guaranteed money tied up for next season. Conversely, the Warriors have over $77.5 million in guaranteed money due next season with the first year kicking in on Klay Thompson’s almost-max deal signed this past fall and continued eight-figure deals for Andrew Bogut, David Lee, Andre Iguodala and Stephen Curry (crazy, but Steph is at the lowest end of that list).

Still, Lacob, Kerr and GM Bob Myers will talk in the offseason and they’ll all agree to go into the luxury tax in order to match whatever some team offers Green. Maybe they look to find takers for David Lee’s expiring $15-plus million deal, but however they swing it, they aren’t losing Green.

Sorry Dre.
