Ben Simmons Has Just One Purchase He Regrets Since Becoming A Multi-Millionaire

When Ben Simmons was selected first overall in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, he was automatically slated to make $5.9 million in his first year as a professional basketball player thanks to how NBA rookie contracts are structured.

Simmons will make nearly $20 million over the course of his three-year rookie deal, and that doesn’t include any of his endorsement money that could easily exceed his NBA salary. The point is, that’s a lot of money for someone in their early-twenties. You’re bound to make a poor purchase or several, and Ben Simmons did exactly that.

Simmons was a guest on Maverick Carter’s show, Kneading Dough, which Carter hosts on The Undefeated. Carter’s show is all about professional athletes earning their first big paycheck, and Ben Simmons’ advice for anyone in his shoes is simple: don’t buy expensive cats.

“There is a few things, I had two savannah cats,” Simmons said when asked about which purchase he regretted the most. “I had to get rid of them though, they were crazy. I had one that was around $4,000, and then I got a male that was second generation, no, third generation, and he was $6,000. ”

A savannah cat is a a mix between your regular domestic cat, and a serval cat, a wild cat found in Africa. Simmons’ savannah cat made a cameo in a short video he made for The Undefeated last year, and while they look calm in the footage, according to Simmons, trying to take care of them was a nightmare.

We’re going to have to agree with Ben Simmons here. Spending $10,000 on two cats you can’t control does sound like a mistake.
