It’s only been a week and Carmelo Anthony has already had a tough start to the offseason. His issues with the Knicks are well-documented, with Phil Jackson saying he needs to leave New York this summer during exit interviews, but now things are also apparently not going well in his home life.
According to TMZ, Anthony and wife LaLa are splitting, with LaLa moving into her own New York City apartment, separate from Carmelo. The initial reports claimed the split was amicable, and sources told the New York Daily News that their marriage of seven years had simply been rocky for a long time.
However, in the wee hours of the morning on Tuesday, a new TMZ report claimed that Carmelo had gotten a dancer from an NYC gentlemen’s club pregnant, which made matters worse with LaLa. TMZ wrote that there is “virtually zero chance for reconciliation” now.
It’s extremely sad to hear about the couple’s split, as they have a 10-year-old son, Kiyan, and began dating in 2004. There are some speculating that the split may make Melo more willing to waive his no-trade clause, as one of his primary reasons for wanting to stay with the Knicks was to keep his family in New York, but the split still wouldn’t change that he would either have to uproot his son or be away from him should he go elsewhere.
Hopefully the two can manage to find a way to work things out, despite what reports say.
