We usually see this in soccer. More specifically, indoor soccer, where players can use the boards to bounce the ball past unwieldy defenders. In basketball, you really need momentum to pull off the feat. It’s almost like a singular give-and-go, with the solo offensive player accelerating past their defender to receive the bounce pass they gave to themselves. It’s not easy, or even recommended, but sometimes it works.

Regardless, Gordon Hayward spontaneously elected to try the move Tuesday night during the Jazz-Lakers exhibition in Hawaii. The only reason he even tried the play stems from how much Clarkson is overplaying him along the sideline.

First, Gordon deflects the pass to Kobe Bryant in the near corner, and Trey Burke saves the ball back to him. But as he turns to go the other way, Jordan Clarkson is right up in his mug. Hayward makes the split-second decision to send the ball one way, while he goes the other. And it works!

In fact, Hayward takes the advantage to facilitate an easy Rudy Gobert reverse.

The Jazz would go on to win the game, and Hayward only had four points and two dimes in 12 minutes. But he also had the play of the game, unless you count Trevor Booker’s slap as a play.
