Fox Sports announced on Thursday that Gus Johnson will lead its Big 3 broadcast team along with Jim Jackson and Michael Rapaport. Johnson—famous for once screaming “My name’s Al Harrington and I GET BUCKETS”—will have the chance to call Harrington as he co-captains the Trilogy team along with Kenyon Martin.
Johnson’s move to Fox Sports pushed him off of NCAA Tournament and NFL coverage, where he became famous for his boisterous calls. But with Fox he’s been able to cover the Big East tournament and even tried his hand at soccer. Basketball and football are where Johnson belongs, though. And this is a perfect pairing with his talents. Imagine him getting excited as someone spots up to hit a 4-point shot? And the joyous call that results when they make it. I’m excited already.
The teams are pretty stacked, too, and Johnson calling games on TV will add a bit of extra excitement to the events. It is curious that Rapaport will be used as a sideline reporter for these games. That’s not something he exactly has experience with, though he has contributed on FS1 talk shows in the past.
We’ll see how it all shakes out, but if their team hats are any indication, Big 3 and its broadcast partner knows what it’s doing here.
