Kevin Durant Used His Height To Give Himself A Unique Advantage At Super Bowl 50

And, finally, something about Kevin Durant that doesn’t involve his upcoming free agency.

Durant just so happened to be in the Bay Area over the weekend for Super Bowl 50—the Thunder lost to Golden State 116-108 on Saturday—so he took up his other passion besides basketball: photography.

The Players’ Tribune does some pretty neat stuff with professional athletes, and it gives them another outlet to showcase their voice and/or creativity. So, when the Tribune needed a photographer for the big game, Durant volunteered without hesitation. As he explained, the Super Bowl is an event unlike any other, even for a guy who has played on some of the biggest stages in sports. It’s a “global event,” as Durant said.

The thing is, however, Durant almost didn’t get to fulfill that dream: We had just beat Orlando at home the night before and our next stop was the Bay. The plane was taking off soon and I was cutting it a little close getting to the airport. What did I forget? I tried to scan my house in my imagination, searching for something I could’ve left on a table or by the door. But I had packed my luggage like normal: shoes, gear, headphones, computer. I kept driving but it was still bothering me. Then it hit me: the black bag on the dresser. My Canon 7D. My camera was in there. The one I got for my birthday this year.

I was able to turn around and swoop it up and still make it to the airport with a couple minutes to spare. Coach Donovan … thanks for not leaving without me. Moral of the story: show up with the right tools for the job. This weekend, I guess I had two jobs.

You can check out all of Durant’s photos on the Tribune‘s website.

By his own admission, Durant is still growing as a photographer. But he does bring up a good point, which is that his height can bring a different perspective to photos. It’s cool to see Durant’s avocation in action, especially at the biggest sporting event of the year.
