Kyle Korver’s Incredible Shooting Just Keeps Getting More Accurate

Kyle Korver‘s NBA record for consecutive games with a three-pointer ended at 127 on March 5, but his shooting has only continued to get better. After a blistering opening few months, Korver’s accuracy from the field has somehow gotten even better, and this might go down as the single greatest shooting season over the last 32 years.

Before the all-star break, Korver led the league with an effective field goal percentage at 62.8. Effective FG percentage “adjusts for value of a 3-point field goal relative to a 2-point field goal. ((FGM + (0.5 * 3PM)) / FGA,” via NBA.com.

According to John Schuhmann of the Hang Time Blog, as of this past Friday, Korver’s been sporting an effective field goal percentage of 70.9 since the all-star break. That’s one of the best improvements in the league, for someone that was already shooting at a league-leading pace.

Schuhmann adds that Korver’s incredible improvement on an already impressive display of marksmanship to start the season, means he’s having the best season shooting the ball, since Artis Gilmore recorded an effective field goal percentage of 65.4 during the 1980-81 season. In fact, only Gilmore and Wilt Chamberlain have ever bested Korver’s eFG percentage in the history of the NBA!

The craziest part? Korver has shot a better percentage from both the field and from beyond the arc before. He holds the NBA record for 3-point field goal percentage when he connected on 53.6 of his 3’s during the 2009-10 season with Utah. This season, he’s only shooting 49.1 percent from beyond the arc (and coincidentally that’s his field goal percentage from the field, too), but he’s attempting 5.5 three-pointers per game. During that record-setting season in Utah, he only attempted 2.2 three-pointers per game.

Korver isn’t just knocking down three’s at a record-setting pace, he’s also attempting them. So far, it’s a truly special season shooting the ball.

Even so, Korver declined the NBA’s invitation to participate in the three-point shootout over the all-star break to spend some time with his new-born daughter. Not only can he shoot light’s out, but he’s a pretty good dad, too.
