The Lakers Are Planning On Wearing Their Best Throwback Uniforms Ever

The Los Angeles Lakers have long had one of the best uniform sets in American sports. Purple and gold just pops, and they’ve had canny twists and variations on their theme with alternate jerseys through the years. Their aesthetic is so clearly defined, though, that it can be easy to forget just how much their jerseys have changed through the years. Case in point: the uniform you see above, from the 1988-89 season, which is not that long ago, really.

Well, maybe that was a while ago, because the Lakers are reportedly going to play a game or two with some throwback jerseys recalling the era when Magic Johnson ran the floor for the Showtime Lakers. The team hasn’t confirmed it yet or made any sort of official announcement, but when Paul Lukas of Uni Watch says a uniform change is going to happen, he’s usually right.

If they do don the jerseys, it will likely be an homage to the 1986-87 Lakers, who won the NBA title that season. Then again, it might be something else — after all, Magic’s Lakers also won in 1980, ’82 and ’85 and we didn’t see any 30-year celebrations then. Either way, it’ll be cool to see the next generation of Lakers stars wear the mantle of the team’s most decorated era.
