LeBron James Called The Spurs, Not The Cavs, ‘The Best Organization In The NBA’

Everything LeBron James has ever said has been scrutinized to within an inch of its life, some of it warranted, some of it not. During the NBA Draft on Thursday night, the newly-crowned champ and Finals MVP had a chance to speak with University of Washington product Dejounte Murray, who many think could turn out to be the steal of the draft as he fell all the way to the San Antonio Spurs with the 29th pick. But what LeBron told him about the aforementioned team might turn a few heads. Via Raul Dominguez of The Associate Press:

Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James, who shares an agent with Murray and was talking with the youngster as he spoke with Texas reporters on a conference call, told the 19-year-old: ”You might not feel like you landed where you wanted, but you’re with the best organization in the NBA.”

That last part’s the real kicker. LeBron is right, of course. The Spurs have been the most consistent franchise in the league in so many respects for the better part of the last two decades, not to mention the fact that LeBron has seen the absolute best of them during his three Finals showdowns with San Antonio. But you’d think after bringing Cleveland its first championship in more than 50 years, his own Cavs organization would hold that distinction in his mind, at least.

It’s tempting to let our imaginations run wild with this. LeBron, of course, has left the door cracked for a possible exit from Cleveland with his two-year contract and player option. Though he recently announced his intention to remain with the Cavs for at least next season, he’s consistently stopped short of making a long-term commitment. Could the Spurs be a possible destination as the four-time MVP enters the twilight of his career? Or are we just reading way too much into this, as usual?
