Does Brandon Jennings Make Sense For The New York Knicks?

Brandon Jennings has only just returned to action, and teams are already coveting his services. According to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News, the Knicks, who need a point guard in the worst way, are interested in acquiring Jennings from the Pistons.

The Knicks, according to a source, have interest in several point guards including Jennings, who finally returned to the lineup after rupturing his left Achilles tendon nearly 11 months ago.

While the Knicks have played very well this season, point guard is still a glaring weakness. Jose Calderon simply isn’t a starter anymore, while Jerian Grant and Langston Galloway aren’t yet ready to take the reins. If the Knicks were to get Jennings, though, it would probably be this summer, when he’s a free agent. Trading for him this season makes no sense for two main reasons: The Knicks realistically have nothing to entice the Pistons, and it’s still unclear how well Jennings will recover from an injury that has doomed other careers.

Grant’s progress over the rest of the season will likely factor into how the Knicks pursue point guards in free agency. He’s not your typical raw rookie, but a rather well-developed 23-year-old (just three years younger than Jennings). The Knicks may prefer to let the cheaper Grant grow alongside the rest of their core rather than commit big money to Jennings, who wasn’t exactly the most controlled or consistent player before his half season under Stan Van Gundy.
