Nick Young shot 36 percent from the field last season. He had a 14.2 PER (below the league average) and some of the worst misses of anyone in 2014-15. Yet, none of those misses, none of those percentages, are as awful as Nick Young’s performance on Spike’s Lip Sync Battle.
Young was pitted against his fiancée Iggy Azalea, who performed “Freak Me” by Silk. It was, all things considered, a good performance (you know, as good as lip-syncing can be). Then, Young came on stage to “sing” “Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake and just blew it. Young’s wardrobe was on-point, but the rest of the number was cringe-worthy.
He tried all the moves – bending down to the audience with the microphone, stripping off clothing, assuming the pained crooning face, thrashing about on stage – but he forgot the most important move of all… moving his mouth in time with the music. Sometimes, he even forgets to put the mic up to his mouth. Why didn’t he seek out some performance tips from his fiancée before he went on stage? Maybe he thought he didn’t need help, which is a mistake that has doomed kings and emperors many times over. Hubris makes fools of us all.
