The Hilarious Origins Of Steph Curry’s Pregame Dance Routine With Warriors Security Guards

By now, you may have seen the outstanding pregame routine that Steph Curry shares with Golden State security guards. It includes a simple dance paired with a hilariously high-pitched lyrical accompaniment of, “Jones barbecue and foot massage” over and over again.

While that probably seems incredibly strange without any context, there’s an explanation. The dance comes from this outstanding viral video from April of 2009:

That’s comedian Robert L. Hines in character as Toby Jones creating a brilliant hard-sell television commercial spoof. Hines worked with Chicago sketch comedy group Big Dog Eat Child to create the faux ad, which is a follow-up to his previous internet sensation, “Jones’ Big Ass Truck Rental & Storage.”

So, what’s the significance of Curry using the dance as his pregame routine? Well, first of all, presumably just because it’s hilarious. But, also, Curry has previously stated that big men who switch onto him during games are “barbecue chicken.”

Is there a link there? Quite possibly.

Even if that’s not the case, there’s no reason for this ritual to stop being a consistent part of Steph’s warmup. Not only is it outrageous and amazing, it’s also clearly working for Golden State, as the Warriors are deep-frying the Cavs in the Finals.
