Steve Kerr has firsthand experience with the devastation caused by guns. His father, Malcolm H. Kerr, was President of the American University in Beirut in 1984 when he was assassinated by two gunmen. Kerr was a student-athlete at the University of Arizona at the time, and it’s an experience that understandably never left him. So when it comes to the topic of gun control in the United States, the Warriors coach has some pretty strong feelings and no qualms about saying exactly what’s on his mind.

Kerr joined Tim Kawakami on his podcast “Talking Points” recently and delivered a passionate speech about what he believes is the dire need for more common sense gun control legislation in America in the wake of the Orlando nightclub shooting, i.e. the deadliest mass shooting in the history of our country.

In an era when so many sports figures are so protective of their brands and largely unwilling to tackle political topics for fear of alienating their fan base and/or the people who purchase their shoes and apparel, it’s refreshing to see someone take a stand for something they believe in. He’ll undoubtedly receive a certain amount of public backlash, but such is the price for having principles.
