Steve Nash Isn’t Interested In Coaching The Phoenix Suns, Which Makes Perfect Sense

The Phoenix Suns are in disarray right now, having fired head coach Jeff Hornacek after a dismal losing streak. They’re a franchise with no clear direction after failing in their all-out pursuit of LaMarcus Aldridge in free agency and suffering a rash of injury and discontent (but hey, at least rookie Devin Booker looks like a real player). When a franchise’s present and future is as muddy as Phoenix’s, it makes sense to look to the past for answers. Maybe that’s why the team has interest in hiring former Suns great Steve Nash as their head coach.

The only problem with that is that Nash reportedly has no interest in being a head coach in Phoenix or anywhere else. Even though there’s an emerging trend of veteran point guards jumping straight into head coaching gigs from their playing career (See: Jason Kidd, Derek Fisher), Nash reportedly prefers to spend time with his family and on his interests outside of basketball (like his documentary production company, Meathawk).

It’s hard to blame Nash. He’s a smart guy with varied interests, and being the head coach of a basketball team tends to be an all-consuming job — not to mention that the Suns aren’t the most attractive destination for a head coach right now, what with the previously-outlined issues. As much sense as it made for the Suns to reach out to Nash, it makes even more for him to turn them down.
