It’s hard to know what to make of all the premature casting stories going around, but according to one from LatinoReview, Girls‘ wood-working weirdo Adam Driver is up for the part of Nightwing in WB’s upcoming Superman vs. Batman movie. My God, this movie is starting to sound deliciously bizarre. By the way, did you know Driver is a Marine veteran? Happy Vet’s day, y’all.
The 29 year-old actor is a serious contender to play Batman’s estranged partner Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing (formerly Robin)
“Girls” star Adam Driver has emerged as the frontrunner to play Batman’s crime-fighting partner Dick Grayson, aka Nightwing (formerly Robin), in Zack Snyder’s superhero sequel “Batman vs. Superman,” two individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.
It makes sense. Driver is known partly for his character’s strange sexual peccadilloes on Girls, and what’s stranger than being caught in a love triangle between two caped orphans who’ve dedicated their lives to cosplay? Like Girls, I hope there’s a scene where all three of them are bathing together, but not in a sexual way, just as an example of bros bein’ bros.
Driver boasts a unique look that fits the rumored description of Nightwing — Grayson’s post-Robin alter-ego — as a “young John Hawkes,” as first reported by Latino Review. At 6’3″, Driver could hold his own against 6’4″ Ben Affleck, who will play an older and world-weary Batman. [TheWrap]
Uh… what? The only way Adam Driver resembles a young John Hawkes is if John Hawkes got hit with a shrinking ray in his early 30s. Unless Julia Stiles is seven feet tall.
Here’s the part of the story where I invite the fanboys to give me a blanket party on account of the fact that I’m intimately familiar with Driver’s work on Girls (best damn part of that show, if you ask me) and had to look up Nightwing on Wikipedia. Which did nothing but leave me more confused, incidentally.
Who knows if this will actually come to pass (and “studio wants so-and-so for such-and-such!” stories don’t have a great track record), but if it does, Adam Driver fighting alongside Ben Affleck as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman is the weirdest combination ever. I can’t even look at Driver’s face on his Gap ads (which are plastered across buses here in San Francisco) without cracking up, I can only imagine what it’s going to be like trying to watch him deliver lengthy exposition about kryptonite and reversing the polarity of the Batmobile’s adamantium warp drive or whatever. Southie Batman and Bushwick Robin. I know I’m in the minority on this one, but I most certainly would buy that for a dollar.
