‘Harry Potter’ Director David Yates Might Direct The ‘Scarface’ Reboot

Straight out of the TOLDJA’s mouth comes the news that Universal’s Scarface reboot/gift-to-the-rap-community might finally have its director, as Nikki Finke reports that Harry Potter director David Yates is in “final talks” to retell one of Hollywood’s most celebrated gangster films. The timing would be perfect for both Universal and Yates, as the director’s schedule has been pretty clear ever since he wrapped Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

In fact, with the exception of the TV movie Tyrant and his rumored interest in the eventual Tarzan movie, Yates ain’t working on nothing but the bills.

“Universal has been through a couple of drafts and now is very high on the current draft. The first stop is the director. This is before any conversations on talent or timing.” I’ve learned that the studio is in final talks with British director David Yates who directed the final four films in the Harry Potter film series (#s 5, 6, 7, and 8 from 2007-2011) – and in my opinion should have won some Oscar nominations for them as the franchise grew dark and interesting under his helming. Though he normally works at Warner Bros, Yates has been the subject of considerable chatter over which film projects he’d do next. (Via Deadline)

It’s important to point out that Finke notes that this isn’t a sequel to the 1983 Al Pacino version or even the original 1932 version starring Paul Muni. This also isn’t a remake of either of those films, because Universal wants something brand new with unique characters that tell us a new story. Except, of course, it will still share the original title and same basic premise of an immigrant gangster with limitless ambitions of taking over the entire underworld. But other than that, it’s not a remake, okay?

So what kind of ethnicity will be at the center of this new Scarface? The last rumors had it focusing on a Mexican kingpin, but if Yates takes the job, I hope it’s wizards!
