Sony Is Rebooting ‘Zorro.’ Guess What Movie The New Idea Is Compared To.

It has been nine years since Antonio Banderas last sported the stylish facial hair of playboy Don Alejandro de la Vega and, more significantly, the black mask of the caped Mexican hero Zorro, so by Hollywood standards we are looooooooong overdue for a brand new version that tells the same exact story. Sony Pictures has signed up-and-coming writer and playwright Chris Boal to pen the screenplay for a gritty reboot of the story of a masked man who helps the helpless and protects those who cannot protect themselves, all while maintaining a wealthy alter ego that nobody ever realizes is the same guy with the sword.

Does that story sound a little familiar? It does to Sony, so naturally this new Zorro is going to be made a lot like another movie that all reboots are being made just like.

I’m told that the ambition of the movie is less traditional swashbuckler, and more of a Dark Knight-style unveiling of the character with a new backstory, gritty realism and emotional core. There will be swordplay, combined with the martial arts that came from Europe and created a deadly combination of action and lethal fighting systems that combined swords, daggers, grappling and bare knuckles. What’s hilarious about this is that when Bob Kane first created Batman way back in the old people days, he openly admitted that he was inspired by the story of Zorro. So basically we’re getting a Zorro that is inspired by Batman Begins, which is based on the character created by a guy who based his character on Zorro. These reboots have more layers than we give them credit for.

It’s just a shame that Sony isn’t giving us the Zorro: Reborn idea from the failed TV series. Because that Zorro looked like the most amazing Zorro to ever swash our buckles.

*I know the banner image doesn’t make much sense, but I feel like we don’t talk about Zorro: The Gay Blade enough. It was George Hamilton’s finest work.
