I’ve always said the Dark Soul titles were really more horror games than RPGs. Oh, sure, there are experience points and things to equip and all that, but in terms of atmosphere and level design, Dark Souls is more Resident Evil than it is Final Fantasy.
So, the new grindhouse-style Dark Souls III trailer, which you can check out above, is actually pretty fitting. Sure, it’s just an April Fools thing, but sometimes April Fools gags can result in something good! Granted, that’s pretty rare, but it can happen. The Evil Dead-style font, the gravel-voiced announcer, “When you pick a fight with the devil, you’d better be stronger than hell” — it’s all pretty perfect.
I have to say, this trailer kind of got me hungry for a full-on From Software survival horror game. Or maybe just something from them with more of a sense of humor. I have nothing against the morose, deadly-serious world of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, but maybe it’s time to lighten things up just a little bit. Dark Souls III is supposed to be the end of the series, so I suppose we’ll see what happens next.
