‘Doom’ Goes Old-School With Free Beta Codes At Your Local GameStop

The new Doom is just a little over a month away, but before it arrives, Bethesda will be doing some last-minute testing with a big multiplayer beta. Up until now, the only confirmed way to get into the Doom beta was through a code that came with early copies of Wolfenstein: The New Order. But Wolfenstein came out nearly two years ago! What about folks who didn’t plan ahead, bought Wolfenstein used or may have misplaced their codes? Do they get to have some friend-fraggin’ fun, too?

Thankfully, they do. Bethesda is embracing Doom‘s old-school roots, and will be handing out beta codes at physical GameStop locations, starting at 6 p.m. on April 1. Presumably, this isn’t an April Fool’s joke, although it would be funny if everybody who showed up got a download code for Daikatana instead. Codes will continue to be given away until April 3. All in all, this is a cool move, and a nice throwback to the ’90s when we all traded the shareware version of Doom on floppy disks.

The Doom multiplayer beta stars March 31, so folks who have Wolfenstein codes do get a small jump on things. Doom officially hits store shelves May 13.
