Five Games: ‘Hohokum’ And Everything Else You Need To Play This Week

Consoles, PCs, handhelds, Facebook, smartphones — the world of gaming is becoming increasingly confusing and fragmented, but don’t worry, we’re here to simplify things for you. Each week I’ll rattle off five games I think you might want to check out this week. Keep in mind, these articles aren’t meant to be comprehensive lists of everything coming out that week so much as a nice rounded tasting menu. So, let’s get to it…

This Week’s Excessively Japanese-ey Thing

Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed (PS3 & PS Vita, Aug. 12th)

I know I’ve described several games as the most Japanese thing ever in this column, but, well, we have a new champion folks. Akiba’s Trip: Undead & Undressed tasks you with running around the Akihabara shopping district in Tokyo fighting demons disguised as regular people. How do you defeat these demons? By tearing off their clothes and exposing them to the light of course! Apparently it’s not a bad game, but yeah, that’s some premise.

This Week’s Arcade Throwback

Hangeki (PC, Aug. 11th)

Hangeki is Space Invaders on ridiculous neon steroids. Basically, Hangeki is a standard Space Invaders clone until you rack up enough points to unleash a wide variety of colorful, screen-clearing super moves. Looks like a good bit of sensory overload. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Adventure Game

Mega Coin Squad (PC, Mac & Linux, Aug. 15th)

Mega Coin Squad is Mario Bros. mixed with a bit of Smash Bros. and a whole boatload of coins. Mega Coin Squad lets you journey through a traditional (albeit completely coin-obsessed) single player platformer, or brawl over coins with your friends in a classic, trash talk-encouraged local multiplayer mode. Here’s the game’s Steam page.

This Week’s Strategy RPG

Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited (PS Vita, Aug. 7th)

Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited is a handheld remake of Disgaea 4 that packs in a bunch of extra stuff, including new characters, skills and an all-new scenario to play through. Strategy RPGs always work better on handhelds anyways, so this is worth a look if you didn’t play the original PS3 version.

Pick of the Week

Hohokum (PS3, PS4 & PS Vita, Aug. 12th)

It’s the lazy, hazy dog days of summer, so this week’s pick is Hohokum, a game more about chilling out than high-stakes action. In Hohokum you play as sentient line/serpent that flies around a fantastical world that’s one part Eric Carle, one part Yellow Submarine. There’s no score or time limit and goals are very vague — the idea is just to chill out and enjoy screwing around. Sounds nice to me.

I’m going to get you guy through this summer drought, don’t worry. Any games you’re itching to get your hands on that I failed to mention? Hit the comments and let the world know.
