Shovel Knight Is Getting His Own Amiibo And Is Likely Joining The ‘Super Smash Bros.’ Roster

Nintendo seems to be getting increasingly comfortable about including third party characters in their Super Smash Bros. series. The Big N recently made fighting fans very happy by adding to Ryu to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS, and now it looks like an even more surprising character may be joining the fray.

Earlier today a British game retailer accidentally jumped the gun and tweeted this announcement for a Shovel Knight Amiibo…

A German retailer made a similar mistake. Both announcements have since been pulled down. While the existence of a Shovel Knight Amiibo isn’t definitive proof he’ll be joining the Smash Bros. roster, Nintendo has yet to make an Amiibo for a character that doesn’t appear in a Nintendo-published game. Shovel Knight developer Yacht Club has also been teasing a “megaton” announcement for this week, and will be attending Nintendo’s “Nindies” event at this year’s PAX Prime. The stars definitely all seem to be aligning.

While we’re on the subject of Shovel Knight, the game’s first major expansion, Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, is coming out soon. Here’s a trailer.

Any Shovel Knight fans out there? Happy he’s joining the Smash Bros. roster, or has Nintendo gone a little too obscure with this one?
