Duke Nukem Forever, Finally

By 09.07.10

Subtle.

What will we make all our vaporware jokes about now?  Duke Nukem Forever, the game announced on April 28th, 1997 — before Google and and 2K Games took over after 3D Realms laid off their Nukem development team after 12 years (they actually had employees working on this for 12 years?).  Gearbox now owns the Duke Nukem franchise, and showed a trailer along with fifteen minutes of playable game at 2K’s booth at PAX.

Before the trailer began, [Gearbox Software president Randy] Pitchford took another opportunity to assuage gamer’s concerns. “It’s coming in 2011. It’s coming in 2011. It’s absolutely going to come, and we will have it shipped. We brought you Borderlands last year. We know what we’re doing. It’s coming on the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3 and Windows PC.” And it’s not just single-player; Pitchford says that DNF’s “competitive multiplayer kicks ass; it’s out of control.” [Joystiq]

There’s a video below if you don’t believe it (and I wouldn’t blame you).  According to Joystiq, the playable demo includes several things you’d expect from Duke Nukem: a urination scene, kicking an alien’s eye through goalposts after defeating him, some swearing, and an implied BJ.  Which would all be shocking to evening news commentators if this were 1997.
