Google Test Drives Self-Driving Cars, Drunk Uncle Is Thankful (Video)

This is either the future of driving -or the last thing you see before a collision.

Google has been helping me find my homepage for years, so I don’t really thinks it’s too much to ask that they also drive me to my house every once in a while. As showcased at the TED 2011 (Technology Entertainment and Design) conference, it looks like my unprovoked demands aren’t all that far from becoming a reality.

Headed by Google engineer Sebastian Thrun, the self-driving car concept started when Thrun lost a close friend to an auto accident when they were 18-years-old. Since then, the engineer has “has dedicated himself to saving a million lives a year by eradicating driver error.”

Catch the Google vehicles in high-speed action after the jump. With footage from both outside on the track and inside the vehicle, Google proves that you don’t actually need a driver’s leg in order to push the pedal to the metal.
