In 1978, The Super Dictionary defined “forty” for us by relaying the story of the time Lex Luthor stole 40 cakes when no one was looking. He took 40 cakes. That’s as many as four tens. And that’s terrible. The panel from the dictionary later went viral on the internet and became a bit of a meme. Why he took the cakes has remained a mystery, but I spoke to an expert who looks suspiciously like me wearing a fake mustache who offered this explanation: “because cakes are f*cking delicious“.
Now Superman #709 offers a more in-depth explanation for The Great 40 Cakes Theft (panel above), and in doing so they’ve also entered the meme into official DC canon.
