Is An Animated Star Trek Series In The Works?

After the cancellation of  Star Trek: Enterprise, it’s unlikely that Paramount will pony up the money to make another live-action Trek show any time soon. (In fact, they turned down pitches for live-action series from Jonathan Frakes and Bryan Singer in favor of going for J.J. Abrams reboot movie.) But if a live-action series is too expensive, what about doing an animated Trek?

That’s the question Trek Movie tweeted to Roberto Orci, co-screenwriter of the 2009 Star Trek movie. His response?

An animated Trek would certainly make sense – it could help keep the franchise alive between movies and get to explore the stories they’ll never get to do on the big screen, while still being a hell of a lot cheaper than a live-action show. Let’s just hope that it’s not as cheap as the original 70’s animated series, which ended up using James Doohan as just about every alien and couldn’t afford have Walter Koenig on the crew. (Not to mention inventing invisible “life-support belts” because Filmation couldn’t afford to animated the characters in space suits.)
