Beauchene’s Exploded Skulls: Try To Not Imagine This Happening To Your Skull

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve done a disturbing art post, in no small part because I wanted to find something worthy of the word disturbing. Although most people seemed as troubled as myself by Half Woman, Half Machine, All Disturbing, some were still “meh.” AndyCrosby on Digg wrote, “I was expecting far worse, found it a bit lame to tell the truth.”

Challenge accepted sir.

This next post had my stomach churning the entire time I was working on it. Beauchene Skulls, also known as Exploded Skulls, were developed in the 19th century by a French anatomist for learning purposes. They are real human skulls that have been dissected and reassembled with moving parts so you can more closely observe how the skull is assembled. And you can still buy them.

The thought of a man meticulously cleaning out skulls and assembling these sculptures makes my skin crawl. How about you?
