A couple months ago Universal and Ron Howard’s development of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower
Now Universal has passed on The Dark Tower and on Guillermo del Toro’s At The Mountains of Madness adaptation over concerns about the cost, and yet they’re still paying over $200 million for a movie based on a board game directed by Peter Berg (Hancock) and starring Taylor Kitsch. They’re also budgeting over $200 million for 47 Ronin starring Keanu Reeves and directed by Carl Rinsch (who hasn’t directed a feature film yet). But, yeah, they passed on The Dark Tower because they balked at paying for a limited-run TV series along with the first film, which would save money in the long term by having the cast, locations, and set pieces on hand for both. Because a movie based on a board game where you stick red pegs into plastic ships is a much better investment.
So this is depressing, but would seeing two dogs ride a scooter cheer you up?
