A Compendium of Cool Comics Cosplay – August 19th

Once again it’s time for Gamma Squad’s regular Friday comic book cosplay feature, showing off some of  the best costuming from the cosplay community. With so many cosplayers working in the superhero and comics genre, we think there are many cosplayers who deserve to have their work highlighted.

Gamma Squad is committed to giving a voice to the cosplay community. Each week we spotlight our favorite costumes and each month we host a cosplay contest. We’ll be picking a theme for each month and inviting cosplayers, costumers and photographers to submit related pictures of their work to our Flickr group to be considered. We’ll then pick our top choices and post them on Gamma Squad for the adoration of all.

The themes for the upcoming months are:

  • August: The Walking Dead
  • September: The DC Reboot
  • But in the meantime, let’s continue with this week’s selection!

This incredible take on Storm’s costume from the X-treme X-Men series captures every detail perfectly. Breathtaking!

This suave and sophisticated cosplayer oozes menace in his version of President Lex.

Young Avengers: Stature and Hawkeye cosplay by enelyasol. Source: Flickr

Two Young Avengers get brought to life in this cosplay by two talented costumers. Pym particles not included.

Tank Girl Cosplay by little_ewok51 on Cosplay.com. Source: Cosplay.com

This cosplayer gets extra bonus points for including an actual tank in her pictures. Admittedly, the budget may not always stretch to such excesses. And Comic-Con tends to frown upon weapons of mass destruction rolling up at the front door.

Kitty Pryde cosplay at San Diego Comic-Con 2011. Photo by andreas_schneider. Source: Flickr

There’s some fantastic cosplay of the X-men’s favorite girl-next-door and this cosplay from Comic-Con has to rank amongst the best depictions of her most recent costume.

Black Lightning cosplay by BigMike_779. Source: Flickr

JLA member Jefferson Pierce gets the cosplay treatment thanks to BigMike. And a fine job he does too, capturing the look perfectly.

Mary Jane Watson by screaM4Dolls on Deviantart. Source: Deviantart

MJ cosplay might not be a big budget production, but it still takes some skill to ensure the character’s not just a generic redhead. Here screaM4Dolls recreates a classic John Romita, Sr./Adam Hughes composition to great effect.

The Joker cosplay by GC5 on Cosplay.com. Source: Cosplay.com

There’s plenty of takes on the Joker from cosplayers, but this version neatly manages to capture the character without being slavish to any particular depiction. Admirable!

Domino Cosplay at San Diego Comic-Con 2010. Photo by RattMice. Source: Flickr

X-Force’s Domino seems to be a popular choice amongst cosplayers and this take is definitely choice. She might be smiling, but she still looks like she could kick our collective asses.

G’nort cosplay at C2E2 2011. Photo by lxromero. Source: Flickr

When the Green Lantern failed to meet expectations, most people claimed that was because of the notable absence of G’nort. Well, a few. Or maybe one. But this cosplayer is obviously a big enough fan to want to readdress that injustice.
