Benicio Del Toro May Play KHAAAAAAN in New Star Trek Movie

Hey, you know what was a good movie? The Wrath of Khan. What, you’ve never seen it? It was the second film in the original run of Star Trek movies and starred Ricardo Montalban as Khan, a villain first introduced in the TV show, back for revenge. The movie had it all — epic space battles, shocking deaths, mind controlling ear slugs, uh, Kirstie Alley as a Vulcan.

Well, the second movie in J.J. Abrams’ new Trek run is going to start production soon, and word is Benicio Del Toro has been offered the villain role. Could he be playing some variation on the Khan character? It would make sense — both Del Toro and Montalban are Hispanic and well, honestly that’s the only proof we have, but come on! It makes sense, right?

Well, sort of. Yes, Del Toro and Montalban are both Latino, but aside from that they’re pretty different actors. Montalban had an over-the-top intensity perfect for the role of Khan. Del Toro on the other hand, not so much. Sure Benicio has some good performances under his belt, but lately his intensity in most of his movies seems to hover steadily around “just woke up from a nap” levels. So yeah, we’ll see how this works out.
