Wizorb: Breakout Meets Zelda

Today, Wizorb hits the last platform it wasn’t available on, the PS3, and if you haven’t picked it up, I seriously recommend you do so.

The basic conceit of the game is that you play a Breakout-style game, complete with the usual power-ups… but it’s also a dungeon crawler with RPG progression. You can unlock powers, buy potions, and so on.

In a lot of ways, it’s the greatest 16-bit game that was never released. It also has some good design choices: you almost never find yourself fighting to hit that last stupid block, and the boss battles are frantic and fun without being frustrating or cheap.

I do have some complaints: I feel like the Zelda aspect of the game is a little too shallow and the RPG aspect could have been made deeper, giving the game more replay value. But as it is, the conceit is so perfect, and the gameplay so fun, that it’s worth the four bucks if you haven’t played it already.
