Remember Me is playable to the public for the first time on the floor of PAX East. And we’ll spare you the memory puns. It’s engaging, remarkably so.
Unfortunately the demo Capcom has up doesn’t let you mess around with the memory remixing that serves as the game’s central gimmick. But it does let you try out the platforming.
The game is still rough around the edges: The camera in the demo in particular is jumpy and it isn’t happy when you decide to take control. It’s reminiscent of Uncharted in that way. But the game itself is smooth as silk. Platforming is simple, logical, and coherent, using neat “augmented reality” tags to differentiate graphics textures from something you can actually jump on and to offer up enemy statuses.
Combat, meanwhile, is very, very smooth. It’s rhythm-based but it’s different from the Batman: Arkham games; you string together combos by properly timing your next hit, and the Combolab is actually pretty crucial to getting the hang of it. Once you get the timing down, it’s incredibly slick but simultaneously very challenging.
Graphically and sonically, the demo is pretty much perfect, although that’s to be expected. There are lots of little details that make things work.
All in all, Remember Me looks like it’s going to deliver on its promises, and then some. The Capcom team seems very excited about the title as well: At the panel, they gushed about how much fun the game was to play.
Sure, they’re paid to say that. But playing the demo, you knew exactly what they meant. June can’t come soon enough.
