ANMAN_ANN_Cv2_mmg2pweou2_

You think Jeff Lemire is done making it dusty when you read Animal Man? Think he's squeezed every bit of tragedy and sadness out of the death of Buddy's son? Wanna bet? Our full review below, plus reviews of books from DC, Marvel, Titan, Boom!, and IDW.

This annual stops to linger on Buddy Baker as he remembers a case that involved his son. There's a spider queen who eats dreams on the loose, and Cliff, needless to say, gets abducted in short order. So Buddy has to save his son, something made more difficult by his failure to do just that. It all ends on a note of heartbreak your rarely find in comics.

Out of all the annuals this week, this one is the most urgent, most beautiful, most wrenching. Lemire is a popular writer for a reason, and this book is a reminder why. Travel Foreman's art helps as well, being surprisingly close to Steve Pugh in some respects. Even if you don't follow Animal Man as an ongoing, pick this up: It's worth the money and then some.

What about the other books this week? Let's take a look...

BOOM_3GUNS_V3

Unsurprisingly, with 2 Guns headed to theaters this weekend (yes, it's based on a comic book), the sequel starts this week. And, actually Steven Grant delivers a pretty fun heist book, so far. The complications are layered on thick already, the main villains are imminently hateable people, and there are already plenty of secrets. It's a fun read, and if you like crime stories it's a book worth getting.

COLLID_Cv1_PRINT_3pncuy4wjo_

Simon Oliver and Robbi Rodriguez turn out a tasty piece of blue-collar science fiction. Set in a world where physics can and often does go wrong, it's about the guys who go in and fight the fires... or the weird changes in gravity. It's a very loose and fun book, and it's great to see Vertigo going in on science fiction this way. Definitely a book to pick up.

tom-strong-and-the-planet-of-peril

Chris Sprouse returns to Tom Strong, who he co-created with Alan Moore, for a new pulpy story. Sprouse's pencils are strong as always, and Peter Hogan stands in fairly admirably for Moore on this series, but it remains to be seen how the book is paid off, especially since this features... well, "science-heroes", the America's Best term for superheroes. It's an odd choice for Vertigo, but an interesting launch to the book. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

captain-midnight-1-rivera-cover

After an iffy zero issue, Joshua Williamson's take on this old pulp hero picks up a little bit. It helps that Captain Midnight is actually surprisingly violent for a book like this; Williamson is hinting there might be something more than a little off about Jim Albright, which is a nice touch. I'm still on the fence about it, but Dark Horse running this book makes a little more sense now.

IT-CAME-Cover

Dan Boultwood takes an axe to cheesy British genre movies of the 1950s such as The Crawling Eye, and it's hilarious. True, it pays off better if you're familiar with the British film industry and its tendency to try and out-cheap American International Pictures, but Boultwood's cartoony art and Mad-Magazine sensibility makes for a treat for bad movie lovers.

Skyward-1-Cover

Jeremy Dale hands in a pretty solid high-fantasy take on the hero's quest. Quinn is just a simple farmboy...until his father's past catches up with him. Dale's art might be a little cartoony for some tastes, but Skyward is simply put a well-told story. If you like fantasy comics or have an older child you're looking to buy comics for, this'll scratch that itch nicely.

detail

You may not know Chris Cosentino; he's a celebrity chef known for his reality show appearances and his taste for offal.

You might notice he is not acclaimed as a writer of comic books, and there's a reason. This is fanfic. In fact it hits every stereotypical point of fanfic, from the author inserting himself into the story to the author saving his hero to the author getting to offer up a long-winded and tiresome speech about some issue nobody cares about (vegetarianism, in this case). If it's satire, it doesn't work since it's not funny, and if it's sincere... The mind boggles.

At least Tim Seely and Dalibor Talajic got a paycheck out of it. That's a point in the win column.

BMINC_Cv13

Grant Morrison and Chris Burnham close out their Batman story with a bang. And end it with a cliffhanger, at the same time, that we're sure they'll pick up elsewhere. Either way, it's a great end to a great book.

Trinity_of_Sin_Pandora_Vol_1-2_Cover-1_Teaser

The first issue of this series was intriguing, if a little "Image from the '90s". The second issue does little to change that direction. On the other hand, Ray Fawkes knows how to write a fight scene, and Daniel Sampere and Vincente Cifuentes know how to draw one, so watching Pandora beat up Giganta and Vandal Savage is a pretty fun read. If you're into action books, this looks to be a sturdy example of the form.

WKE_Cv3_previews_26hv05imyc_

Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy don't really break out of the undersea horror mold just yet with this book, but they're getting there. The fact that the horror largely comes from hallucinations right before something eats you helps considerably to shake things up. It's surprisingly action-packed and a lot of fun, although with seven issues to go you've got to wonder where else it's headed. Either way, something unique on the stands, and recommended.

REDL_Cv22_6h5gprkqmt_

Charles Soule gives this book a needed shot of black humor to liven up the sometimes grim-n-gritty proceedings, and it's his comic pacing, and ability to create funny dialogue organically, that earns him the right to get pretty dark in a few places. Alessandro Vitti's art is perfectly suited to this book, as well, and between the two of them, they've put out a fun read worth picking up if you're a fan of either.

SM_ANN_2_CVR_fnl_d3p47hlexk_

Scott Lobdell's story, despite the name (and villain) on the cover, isn't about Superman at all; it's about Lois Lane. Along with Dan Jurgens' pencils, it has a pleasing early '90s Superman feel to the proceedings as Lois unravels a murder mystery... after a fashion. It's a fun standalone story leading into the next major arc, and well worth reading.

Flash_annual2(CMYK)_00yjh81yth_

Barry and Hal meet up for a drink and wind up getting sucked into an alien gladiatorial challenge. The real selling point of Brian Buccellato's story, though, is Flash and Green Lantern as a buddy-cop team, and this'll make you kind of sad there's not a Flash/Green Lantern ongoing on the horizon. Sami Basri's clean, detailed art suits the lighthearted nature of the story perfectly, and the result is a fun, if familiar, tale.

3206494-batmanannualcover

A side story about Batman and Arkham Asylum, Batman comes to test Arkham's highest-security wing. Needless to say, with the Anchoress around, things do not go according to plan. The ties to Zero Year aren't really more than minor, but Marguerite Bennett's story is a solid, fun one-off. That said, Wes Craig's pencils are also solid, but this book has five, count 'em, inkers, and the art suffers a bit as a result. Still, a good read for Batman fans.

DETECTIVE_COMICS_ANNUAL_2

John Layman and Joshua Williamson focus this set of stories on Jane Doe, the creepy mimic, and Harvey Bullock, the cop after her. It's an interesting mix of stories not least because it reveals a major twist, and it also has the room to really dig in and take a look around. Of the three art teams, Szymon Kudranski gets the most to play with, but everyone acquits themselves well. If you're following this series, definitely pick up the annual, or if you're looking for a jumping-on point, this will serve as well.

Akaneiro-3-Cover

Justin Aclin and Vasilis Lolos wrap up this miniseries on a somewhat conventional note. They seem stuck to the video game instead of able to explore the concept more fully, which was what made the first issue so engaging. It's a bit of a shame, but hopefully Aclin and Lolos will be given another shot at the mythology without having to plug a combat system.

The-Last-of-Us-American-Dreams-4-Cover

I'm sad to see this mini go: Neil Druckmann and Faith Erin Hicks have turned in a truly wonderful expansion of the game's universe. You'll view Ellie a lot differently after this issue. Definitely pick these up, fan of the game or not; they're great comics on their own.

Amalas-Blade-4-Cover

Steve Horton and Michael Dialynas wrap up their steampunk miniseries with a lot of fighting and a few surprising twists and turns. Plus the final panel will leave you laughing for a solid minute. If you haven't been following this mini, now's the time to pick it up.

c171dab2535f665b207360e6acf6f816

Generally, when you say "Transformers", the words "self-mutilating religious fanatic" don't spring to mind. Leave it to James Roberts to do just that, and even have it work within a context of a goofy cartoon about robots that turn into other things. Alex Milne and Brian Shearer do good work with the art, but it does seem a bit out of place considering how heavy the story gets.

Worlds_of_Sam_Kieth_Cover

Essentially this is an odd mix of autobiography (in a way), art book, and process book courtesy of beloved artist Sam Kieth. It's engaging, in its own way, but it's also a bit hard to follow as Kieth doesn't really follow any sort of scheme, giving it a stream of consciousness feel that seems simultaneously true to his process and also an acquired taste. If you like Kieth's work, this will be a book worth getting.

House of Gold And Bones #4: Richard Clark tries gamely, but Corey Taylor's script remains self-indulgent right to the very, very end. Not worth it unless you're a fan of Taylor, but hey, at least it's not Wolverine: In The Flesh.

King Conan: Hour of The Dragon #3: This pales next to Brian Wood's work on the title, but Timothy Truman's take is still a fun, red-blooded, classic take on everybody's favorite Cimmerian. Worth it for fantasy and Conan fans.

BPRD: Vampire #5: A bit of a low-key wrap-up to this horror story, but still a worthy conclusion, and Gabriel Ba and Fabio Moon's art is always a treat. Recommended.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #24: This book has a twist you probably won't see coming, and it's a pretty interesting one. Worth reading, if you're a fan.
