‘Gamma’: The Comic You Should Be Reading This Week

Are you a fan of Pokemon? Ulises Farinas and Erick Freitas would like to burn your childhood to the ground, if you don't mind. A review of this one shot collecting the strips from Dark Horse Presents, plus books from DC, Dark Horse, Titan, IDW, Valiant, and the notorious Bluewater Comics.

But first, Gamma. Oh, man, Gamma. It's hard to know where to even start with this book, it's that hilarious.

This insane send-up of a certain monster-fighting franchise takes a few pages to get started, but once it does... wow. Our hero is a former monster-fighting celebrity who loses it all, to the point where he collects fifty bucks a throw to let people punch him in the face. A life of whoremongering, drugs, cowardice and failure has pretty much left him a wreck while simultaneously guaranteeing you'll never see Ash in the same way again.

It takes guts to hit the absurd heights this book does, from a Snorlax blockade to a page that deliberately evokes the fall of Saigon. Farinas' art helps quite a bit, not least because it rides the edge between cartoony and real that makes the book simultaneously lighthearted and somewhat bleak, and Farinas really, really knows his way around a patently silly-looking giant monster. The book never loses a sense of emotion, even when it gets pretty ridiculous, and that poker-faced refusal to wink at the audience, either in writing or in art, just makes everything that much funnier.

Love it or hate it, you're going to have an opinion, and there's not a book quite like it on the stands this week. But what else is new this week, and is it just as good?

background (2)

Javier Pulido takes over the art as Matt Fraction writes a story filling in exactly what happens when Kate Bishop bails on Clint, and takes Pizza Dog with her. Pulido largely tells the story in silhouettes as Fraction rapidly shows us that even with her ego cut down to size, Kate's an incredibly formidable opponent. It's got all the snap and verve of the main series; if you love Hawkeye, you'll love this.

RocketeerSpirit-01_cvrCON

A crossover that's far, far overdue finally happens, and it's great. Mark Waid, having written both characters, captures what makes them great perfectly, and Paul Smith's art strikes a balance between the sensibilities of Will Eisner and Dave Stevens that's a joy to read. This is a must-buy, especially if you like both characters.

AODHS1

Tim Seeley can write horror comedy, and this book is no exception. That said, this feels a bit familiar at first, and Ash feels a bit forced into the proceedings for now. Still, it's hard to complain; if you enjoy either franchise, it's worth getting.

2964760-superiorspidermanteamup_1_cover

This is really an Avengers book with Spider-Man in it, built around the premise of Spidey being... well, a huge dick to his fellow superheroes. There's a good explanation for it, of course, and Christopher Yost actually makes it pretty funny... before veering the book into a sharp turn to the dark side. Otto is getting more and more crazy, and the final page gives us a little hint as to how things are going to get worse.

Hunger_1

So, yeah, Ultimate Galactus and 616 Galactus have merged into a new entity, thanks to the fallout from Age of Ultron. Let's just say that nothing remotely good will come of this, especially since Rick Jones is our only hope.

Joshua Hale Fialkov does a good job here, though, not least because Rick Jones has enough snark to put some levity into the proceedings. It's a gimmicky book, but it's certainly not boring.

lobster-johnson-scent-1-featured

John Arcudi and Mike Mignola write a pretty good slice of pulp, which is no secret, but it's always fun to read. Similarly Sebastián Fiumara's art is always gorgeously done and here he shows off a kinectism to his work that really suits the character. In short, it's a great comic; pick it up if you get a chance.

Tomorrowland1-cover

Paul Jenkins asks the question; if you open an interdimensional portal and a bunch of fantasy characters come out of it, over a rave... will anyone notice? The concept is kind of silly and cheesy, and in clumsier hands it'd come off as hippie-dippie nonsense, but Jenkins manages to keep it on the right side of absurd. Alti Firmansyah and Beny Maulana unfortunately can't quite keep up their end; the art is overly generic and a little bit too loose and cartoony. That said, it's not a bad start and it's a pretty funny book, so if it's at the FLCS, give it a read.

Mass-Effect-Foundation-1-00

Mac Walters, writing, and Omar Francia, on art, deliver a fairly solid start to a new Mass Effect story. The book works best if you go in cold, but it's a fun, interesting read even if you've never played a minute of the games. If you're looking for an SF book, this will be a good candidate.

LIBERATORa_1

Bluewater tends to build its books around celebrities, and this makes the exceptionally odd choice of having Lou Ferrigno playing a "character" in a superhero book. It's an interesting conceit, but the book is oddly rushed in its pacing, and Ferrigno turns out to be a distraction, especially since the art here is pretty badly done. It's a shame, as there's the seeds of good work here, but it needed more space.

Man, this might be the nominee for the worst-edited book this week. The writing is actually fairly good, although it depends a bit too heavily on the reader being a big fan of Logan's Run and knowing a lot about the franchise, and the art is... messy, but there's talent there. Mostly it's just the fact that the lettering is sloppy and they even repeat a caption. Again, there's talent here, but it needs better editing to come together.

NOTE: I can't find the cover for this, so just kind of imagine a headshot of Houston with the Canvas Photoshop filter.

Bluewater is notorious for these things, and let's just say this is precisely as good as you'd expect from their reputation. Essentially a ghost walks us through a poorly drawn version of Whitney Houston's life, the sad part being this isn't even the worst art I saw in the review books Bluewater passed along.

248317_624007900960004_1321198737_n

That's a page from the book. It does a good job of telling you just what you're in for.

I can't quite figure this book out. Common sense would tell me that it's something of a satire, based on the title alone, but the content is so self-serious, especially for a book about a guy named Jesus E. Lee trashing Richmond, VA, that I'm not entirely sure it is a satire. The art's a bit crude; Nick Justus has plenty of enthusiasm but not, perhaps, the time or the staff he needs to deliver more polished work. Honestly, it's bizarre, but not in an engaging way: It's a book where you go "Well, huh, that exists. I wonder who for?"

JL_DARK_22_r1_xxx580bfg5_

Jeff Lemire does a little better with the Trinity War crossover story that Geoff Johns, so far, but there's still not really much to this. It's playing it a little too much of a slow burn, and it feels more like a "wait-for-trade" rather than a story you have to follow.

CONST_Cv5_det21wy6zg_

Ray Fawkes and Renato Guedes, however, get the chance to have a little fun with Constantine and Shazam, and the results are simultaneously unnerving and hilarious. Constantine running around as Captain Marvel really has to be seen to be believed. This is a good, well-contained story and one worth picking up.

LARF_Cv2_m5h691daxo_

Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis' hilarious send-up of space opera continues with crack-smoking aliens, moronic space gods, and a fairly nice plasma wolf who isn't snobby and will happily chat with his fellow lackeys while their masters fight. Scott Kolins' art adds a hint of Kirby to the proceedings, and the result is a riot. Definitely check this book out, if you haven't already.

STK612603

This mini continues to be a slow burn, but it's actually quite a solid character drama. We expect no less of something based off the work of Joe Hill, but it says a lot that Vic Malhotra, the artist, can make a book that's essentially just people talking so compelling. Worth picking up if you're not already following it.

BMTDK_Cv22_5as1ndy1s9_

Gregg Hurwitz writes the seemingly impossible: A story that touches both on Batman's personal choices and the mindset of one James Gordon, while making a sometimes somewhat lame villain bad-ass. In addition, Alex Maleev is handing in some wonderful art here; it's grimy, bleak, and troubling, and sets the perfect tone for this story. This is the start of a new arc and it's definitely a buy; it's a great Batman comic.

batman_superman_2_v6c89j46tk_

Greg Pak and Jae Lee continue their spin on this team-up book, and honestly, it's an improvement over the last issue, a lot wittier and looser, and the plot is beginning to cohere. I'm still on the fence about this book, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

UNW_Cv51_2osethg9ek_

Or "the closest we'll get to a Harry Potter/Fables crossover outside of fanfic." Mike Carey and Bill Willingham are delivering a pretty fun story, so far, but we're still looking for a larger payoff to it. On the other hand, Bigby's reaction to his rescue team alone is worth the cost of the issue.

Harbinger_14-665x1024

The Harbinger team does not get out of Vegas unscathed, to say the least, but the central point of this book is once again Faith. Harbinger continues to be one of the best team books on the stands; if you love superheroes, it's time to start reading.

BS_013_COVER_BULLOCK

Basically this is just wall-to-wall ass-kicking. Not that I'm complaining: It's very fun, engaging ass-kicking. Expect action, not Shakespeare, and you won't be disappointed.

The Massive #14: After a fairly quiet few issues, this book gets action-heavy fast. Highly recommended.
Lazarus #2: A strong follow-up to a superb first issue. Definitely one to keep an eye on.
The Bounce #3: Joe Casey's straight-up superhero comic actually hands in its best issue so far, and actually offers a fairly sensitive portrayal of transvestites that actually justifies throwing last issue's gag panel into the mix.
The Crow: Curare #2: This is probably some of the best work J. O'Barr has done, certainly some of the bleakest. This isn't a fun read, but it's a genuinely heartbreaking and effective book.
The Wolverine #7: Paul Jenkins, just in time for Wolvie's next movie, delivers a book about losing his healing factor. And he does a superb job of it. Definitely get on this book if you haven't already.
