‘Venture Bros.’ Explored Robot Dating With “Bot Seeks Bot”

Supervillain nightclubs, robot dating, and all the Brock you can handle: This episode really had it all. As we swing into the hour-long season finale next week, though, we also end on four huge cliffhangers the show casually drops at the end of the episode.

This episode is pretty much straight-up Brock; in fact, the Venture Bros. don’t even appear in the episode, and even Rusty is barely in it. Developing on the events of “O.S.I. Love You”, Brock is looking to take out the Council of Thirteen, and suspiciously, the one Council member they’ve identified has dropped dead of a heart attack. Brock doesn’t trust the lead, but they get enough evidence to reveal Vendata as another member. And he’s posted a personals ad on Guildslist looking to make some “alloys”.

Enter Ghost Robot, just one of the dozens of hilarious cameos in this episode that we’re going to avoid discussing because you need to see them cold. Disguised as “Galacticon”, he and Vendata wind up at a Guild-operated nightclub for supervillains… which is where the show, already pretty funny, really takes off. See, the nightclub is underground, so it’s time for Brock, as Yeti Mummy, and Shore Leave, as The Fruitbat (his idea), to go rescue their informant.

Needless to say, however, Rusty has crashed the party because, well, he’s an idiot. And he’s dragged Billy along for the ride. So that complicates things substantially.

The episode closes on not one, not two, but four different cliffhangers at once. Rusty is at the very, very least seriously injured and possibly dead. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch is invited to join the Council. And the stinger at the end reveals Phantom Limb has been monitoring the Council this entire time, meaning that Boggles the Clown is unlikely to be dead from natural causes.

As for the fourth, it requires paying a little attention, but remember the Monarch’s backstory? Remember the photo he discovered of he and Rusty playing together as buddies that turned up earlier in the season? Pay close attention to Vendata’s timeline at the beginning of the episode… and his last words at the end of it.

A few notes:

  • “Truman Cablowme” is possibly the best insult of the season.
  • The cameo by Leapfrog, of all villains, is a hoot.
  • Brock is apparently really crappy at recognizing silhouettes.
  • The show’s hilarious refusal to acknowledge its celebrity guest stars continues with John Hodgman in a minor role.
  • I’m not ashamed to admit it took me a few episodes to realize the hidden joke in Head Shot’s name. Of course somebody obsessed with his appearance would take the name Head Shot.
