‘Brain Boy’ #1 And Other Comics Of Note, September 11th

It’s a really good week for Matt Kindt, as he’s got three books on the stands and they’re all worth reading. But so’s Fred Van Lente’s take on international espionage and psychics. A full review, and a look at books from DC, Marvel, Boom!, Valiant, IDW, and Image under the cut.

Brain Boy shows Fred Van Lente’s usual style that we see in Archer and Armstrong, but in a very different context; psychics working protection details for the federal government. Based on a book from the 1960s, what makes it work so well is that Matt Price, while powerful and pretty arrogant, is also at root a pretty decent kind of guy. He doesn’t want anybody hurt, he’s just bored out of his mind.

Also, Van Lente’s comedic sensibilities are front and center, here. There’s one panel in particular that’s fall-down funny and comes out of nowhere, a perfect example of a picture being worth a thousand words. R.B. Silva and Rob Lean have a lighthearted and detailed style that makes the book a joy to look at.

It’s action-packed, it’s funny, and it ends on a killer cliffhanger. But it’s not the only book you should pick up this week.

<!–pagetitle:Infinity: The Hunt #1–>

Matt Kindt, in the first of three books I’m going to recommend, offers his own take on the teenage superteam team-up. Kindt usually deals in conspiracies and espionage, so to see him take on a relatively light-hearted book like this is actually quite refreshing. Helping considerably is how incredibly funny this book is; it’s worth buying just for the reaction all the kids have to discovering Doctor Doom has a supervillain school. Steven Sanders’ smooth, detailed art goes perfectly with the book itself, and makes it one worth reading.

<!–pagetitle:Mighty Avengers #1–>

Seriously, this book is worth picking up just for the dialogue. Luke Cage trying to manage an angry Power Man, the “Superior” Spider-Man getting taken down a verbal notch or two, Al Ewing’s script is a joy to read. And it’s a zippy, action-packed book as well; I’m not the biggest personal fan of Greg Land’s art, but it works well for this book. Highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle:Eternal Warrior #1–>

Greg Pak finally gets to write the barbarian book he always wanted to, and it’s wonderful. Helping considerably is Trevor Hairsine on art. His sometimes harsh art compliments Pak’s script perfectly, and turns this book into a must-read. Valiant has some of the best superhero books on the stands right now, and this is a superb addition.

<!–pagetitle:Resident Alien #1–>

Peter Hogan’s story of an alien quietly living among us picks up with a murder mystery. Hogan juggles the SF and mystery aspects of this story quite well, and it’s a pretty engaging read. Steve Parkhouse’s spare, grounded art really helps keep the focus on the story, and overall, it makes for a great read and a book you should pick up this week.

<!–pagetitle:Sons of Anarchy #1–>

Christopher Golden’s take on the FX series is solid, and open to new readers as well as fans of the series. And it rather welcomely doesn’t slavishly try to base the art off of promo photos. That said, so far, there’s not much beyond the license to make this stand out.

<!–pagetitle:Mars Attacks Judge Dredd #1–>

A homage to the original Dredd strips from Al Ewing and John McCrea, the two of them have a lot of fun combining the social satire of Dredd with the absurdity of Mars Attacks. Definitely worth picking up, if you’re a fan of either franchise.

<!–pagetitle:Hit List #1–>

Zenescope tries their hand at a crime/espionage book and the results are a bit underwhelming. Ralph Tedesco’s script mistakes not explaining things for tantalizing hints and profanity and oral sex jokes for grittiness, but it does throw some pretty interesting complications in the way of its characters. Sami Kivela’s art is, well, it’s a Zenescope book so it’s about what you’d expect in terms of male gaze, but it’s reasonably detailed work and Kivela shows restraint with the gore.

<!–pagetitle:Kings Watch #1–>

Flash Gordon, the Phantom, and Mandrake the Magician team up to fight eldritch monsters from space. Jeff Parker’s script is a bit short on creativity, so far, but it’s some solid, well-paced stuff and it doesn’t assume you love all these comic strip characters unconditionally, and it’s also far less pulpy and more grounded than you might expect. Marc Laming, meanwhile, wisely doesn’t try to imitate any of the King Features art team, giving this book its own identity. It’s worth picking up if for no other reason than it’s doing something different with these characters, and it’s got some real promise.

<!–pagetitle:Halo: Initiation #2–>

A fairly straightforward mission for the Spartans gets interesting with a shipjacking. Brian Reed’s script isn’t anything we haven’t seen before, but it’s fun and Marco Castiello does a good job mixing the futuristic and the grounded. Worth it for Halo fans.

<!–pagetitle:Sidekick #2–>

J. Michael Stracyznski, having run out of “washed-up sidekick” jokes, now goes for all the Batman and Robin gay jokes. There are some good ideas here: Barry Chase, our antihero, was deeply screwed up well before Red Cowl came along, and I’ll buy any book with Tom Mandrake’s name on the cover, but there needs to be a bit more to this for it to work as an ongoing.

<!–pagetitle:FBP #3–>

Who knew that combining physics mindscrews straight out of Star Trek and a noirish plot about government corruption would work so well? Simon Oliver and Robbi Rodriguez are turning in a dynamic, entertaining action and SF book you really need to read.

<!–pagetitle:X #5–>

Man, finally! The first four issues of this book were humorless, grim, revenge porn, but this finally shows what you expect out of Duane Swierczynski; good action, depth of character, and a sense of humor. This standalone issue is really what this series should have been all along, and if, not unreasonably, you’ve been avoiding it, now is the time to pick it up.

<!–pagetitle:Batman: Detective Comics 23.2: Harley Quinn–>

Matt Kindt rewrites Harley’s origin, and it almost makes up for the terrible redesign DC just won’t ditch. This is how you retell an origin, and Kindt hands in my favorite of the Villains Month issues this week with this book.

<!–pagetitle:Earth 2 15.2: Solomon Grundy–>

Speaking of Kindt, he writes a straight-up horror story that happens to double as Solomon Grundy’s origin. Aaron Lopresti and Art Thibert do a solid job on the book, although one wishes for an artist with more facility with horror; this book would have been a straight-up classic with Tom Mandrake at the drawing board. Still, it’s a clever take on a sometimes goofy villain, and worth reading as a standalone book.

<!–pagetitle:Green Lantern 23.2: Mongul–>

There’s literally nothing new in Jim Starlin’s take on the yellow-skinned commander of Warworld, although Starlin is allowed to make the character as brutal as he deserves to be. On the other hand, it’s always fun to see Starlin back, and Howard Porter is admirably up to the task of showing off the destruction Mongul is capable of.

<!–pagetitle:Superman 23.2: Brainiac–>

Tony Bedard and Pascal Alixe… don’t really do much with Brainiac, if I’m being honest. But Alixe’s art is often beautiful, and if you’re a fan of Superman, it’s a book worth picking up.

<!–pagetitle:Aquaman 23.1: Black Manta–>

This actually fairly directly ties into Forever Evil; Tony Bedard and Geoff Johns ask the valid question of what defines Black Manta without Aquaman. An especially nice touch is that Manta, a villain who’s often considered lame, gets a moment of badassery that’s both stunning and a wee bit disturbing; funny helmet or not, Black Manta is dangerous.

<!–pagetitle:Justice League Of America 7.2: Killer Frost–>

Sterling Gates manages to make you feel pretty bad for Caitlin Snow, the woman entombed inside Killer Frost. This one-shot is well worth picking up because they’ve made Killer Frost the best kind of villain; the one who actually has a justification for the awful things she does, and no ability to stop it.

<!–pagetitle:Action Comics 23.2: Zod–>

Greg Pak and Ken Lashley try pretty hard to make Zod an interesting character, but the deck is stacked against them; he’s basically Superman, and Superman is a boring character. Pak can’t do much to turn Zod around, but the issue itself is a fun read, and Lashley can really draw a Kryptonian monster.

<!–pagetitle:Flash 23.2: Reverse-Flash–>

Right on the heels of a really good issue with Grodd, we’ve got this issue that we previewed last week. It turns out that Daniel West’s real superpower is self-delusion and dodging the blame, in an issue that shows just how skillful Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul can be at writing character. Also, Scott Hepburn’s fill-in art is a lot of fun, as well; this is definitely a Villains Month one shot to pick up.

<!–pagetitle:Batman: The Dark Knight 23.2: Mr. Freeze–>

Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti struggle, a bit, to find something new and engaging about Mr. Freeze. It’s not a bad origin, and Jason Masters is well-suited to the book, but it doesn’t really bring anything new to the table.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful to see Marv Wolfman writing a Titans book, and Cafu’s art is a treat, but not much has changed about the demon king. Mostly for fans, and those who just want to see Wolfman back on Titans, even if only for an issue.

<!–pagetitle:Batman And Robin 23.2: Court Of Owls–>

James Tynion IV and Jorge Lucas hand in a pretty creepy history of Gotham City that’s worth reading even if you don’t follow Talon. Pick this up; it’s a lot of fun and has some disturbing moments well worth the price of admission, especially with Lucas drawing the art.

<!–pagetitle:Batman 23.2: Riddler–>

What does the Riddler do when his nemesis is seemingly dead? This issue, written by Scott Snyder and Ray Fawkes, has the answer, and it’s worth reading because they have a new spin on the Riddler as a character; violent, insecure, snobbish, and highly entertaining.

<!–pagetitle:Justice League 23.2: Lobo–>

The “controversial” “new” Lobo is really not that different from the old Lobo. Marguerite Bennett actually handles this new guy pretty well, and Ben Oliver and Cliff Richards have some attractive art. But the issue ends without paying anything off, and I’m left wondering why DC bothered. Hopefully this will be settled once things get back to their usual chaos in the DCU.

Star Wars #9: Brian Wood drops a bomb here you really need to read. Oh, and this book is its usual well-paced, action-packed awesomeness. So buy it!

The True Lives of The Fabulous Killjoys #4: An interesting book, but this issue feels a bit like filler. Still a compelling, if offbeat story.

Archer And Armstrong #13: This arc concludes in about the most ridiculous way possible in the most hilariously ridiculous comic book I have read in a long time. Definitely get this.
