‘Forever Evil’ #1 And Other Comics Of Note, September 4th

DC follows up Trinity War with a blowout, and it’s just the first issue. Reviews of all the DC villains one-shots, and books from Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, IDW and Boom! under the jump.

The Crime Society of America has shown up, and they drop some pretty nasty bombs right off the top in Forever Evil #1. The less said, the better, but a lot happens in this book, and it’s Geoff Johns at his best. Johns enjoys mixing continuity with major surprises, and this delivers, to say the least.

David Finch and Richard Friend also deliver in the art department. It’s a big deal that starts with a bang, and it promises to be a hell of a lot of fun.

So what about the rest of the books this week. We’ll start with DC’s one-shots, and go from there.

<!–pagetitle:Ventriloquist #1–>

Gail Simone doesn’t write horror nearly often enough, but as this book demonstrates, she’s very, very good at it. Definitely one of the must-buys among these one-shots.

<!–pagetitle:Grodd #1–>

Believe it or not, this is one of the few books actually tied to ongoing events. Unsurprisingly, Grodd with superspeed is not a good thing for Central City, but it makes for a fairly entertaining, if surprisingly hard-edged, book. Brian Buccellato and Chris Batista deliver a pretty compelling book that makes a talking monkey an interesting villain… and that’s no mean feat.

<!–pagetitle:Bizarro #1–>

Really, this is a Luthor book more than a Bizarro one, and as such it’s actually a fun little story of evil brains versus dumb brawn. Nothing earthshaking, but a fun story with a funny ending that riffs on Luthor’s one major flaw: His overweening arrogance.

<!–pagetitle:Two-Face #1–>

Peter Tomasi is the secret weapon of the Batbooks right now, and this story about Two-Face shows why; it’s faithful to the character while giving him a little more dimension. Two-Face may be evil, but he also goes his own way… something the Crime Society is about to learn the hard way.

<!–pagetitle:Relic #1–>

Want to find out who that gigantic yellow-skinned guy was in recent Green Lantern books? Robert Venditti and Rags Morales have the answer for you. And I don’t want to ruin it, but he’s angry for a reason. A must-have for GL readers, and worth a look for everyone else, especially space opera fans.

<!–pagetitle:Joker #1–>

Andy Kubert and Andy Clarke deliver a story about the Joker and his monkey. I’m a bit uneven on this issue: The art’s superb with Clarke delivering two entirely different styles and the book can be darkly hilarious, but the Joker being the victim of child abuse seems a bit trite, and the shadow of Scott Snyder looms large, here. Nonetheless, it’s a fun one-shot for a classic villain.

<!–pagetitle:Poison Ivy #1–>

Derek Fridlofs and Javier Pina take a sometimes problematic villain and make her somewhat interesting. Making Pamela a nutcase with her own scientific genius instead of a victim of the Floronic Man makes her a bit more dynamic as a character, and, needless to say, she’s still dangerous. It’s still just an origin story, but a fun one nonetheless.

<!–pagetitle:Darkseid #1–>

Greg Pak was pretty much the perfect choice for this book; his retelling of Darkseid’s origin is clever while still keeping what makes the New Gods great. Highly recommended.

<!–pagetitle: Cyborg Superman #1–>

Michael Alan Nelson takes a somewhat weak character and gives him a much stronger, and sadder, origin. Perhaps it’s just the ’90s nostalgia talking, but I really liked this particular book. Worth picking up, especially if you remember the Death of Superman.

<!–pagetitle:Count Vertigo #1–>

Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino actually pull off what should be impossible: You feel pretty bad for Count Vertigo by the end of this book, even if the guy is, well, a monster. A solid book worth reading for GA fans.

<!–pagetitle:DeSaad #1–>

An interesting take on a minor character from Paul Levitz, although it’s really more for fans of Earth 2 than anyone else. Still, if you like that book, you’ll enjoy this; pick it up.

<!–pagetitle:DC Universe Vs. Masters Of The Universe #1–>

Keith Giffen and Dexter Soy deliver something you never thought you’d see: He-Man meeting Constantine. Seriously. Is there really anything else I need to tell you? This book is ridiculous, knows it, and glories in it as only Keith Giffen can. Pick it up, you won’t regret it.

<!–pagetitle:X-Men: Battle Of the Atom #1–>

It just wouldn’t be an X-Men event without a ridiculously convoluted time travel plotline, right? Right. That said, Bendis and Frank Cho have a lot of fun, helped partially by a willingness to not take things too seriously. Even if you’ve not following the X-books, this is worth picking up.

<!–pagetitle:The Star Wars #1–>

This comic, a direct adaptation of the first draft of Star Wars, is simultaneously fascinating for how much changed and a great book in its own right. Particular plaudits should go to Mike Mayhew, who delivers a really gorgeous pulp SF rendering of the book; he riffs on Ralph McQuarrie a bit, but keeps the style his own. SF fan or Star Wars fan, it’s a must-read.

<!–pagetitle:Hit #1–>

Bryce Carlson and Vanesa Del Rey deliver a straight-up, ’50s-set noir. Honestly, so far it’s pretty conventional for the form, but Carlson lays on the complications thick and fast, and Del Ray’s distinctive art can deliver a noir without resorting to standard cliches. If gritty crime and noir is your thing, this is a book to pick up.

<!–pagetitle:Reality Check #1–>

Glen Brunswick and Viktor Bogdonavic deliver a story about a sad-sack comic book artist right on the cusp of the big money. One problem: His upcoming hit book is now real and he’s got a superhero prancing around LA. The book can feel a bit inside-baseball for the concept, with jokes about the comic book industry, but our hero actually feels like a real person. Hopefully, though, there’s going to be more to this than just Brunswick riffing on real-world versus hero-world.

<!–pagetitle:Codename: Action #1–>

Chris Roberson delivers a fairly straightforward story of the Cold War, dopplegangers, and masked heroes. It’s not bad, but hopefully there’s a little more to it by the next issue than just nostalgia for Bond knockoffs. Jonathan Lau’s clean, moody art helps quite a bit, however; some may pick this book up for the art alone.

<!–pagetitle:The Mocking Dead #1–>

Fred Van Lente turns the hilariously cock-eyed look at tropes and cliches that serves Archer and Armstrong so well on the horde of zombie books. Honestly, it’s pretty funny, especially when he rips on American International Pictures, and Max Dunbar’s cartoony art does well. That said, this book has more promise than delivery on such, so if you’re tired of zombies, you might want to wait for the trade.

<!–pagetitle:Love Stories To Die For #1–>

Dirk Manning hands in two stories that… well, honestly, they don’t really go anywhere. It’s not a bad book, at all, but it’s also nothing you’ll miss if you choose to skip it at the FLCS.

<!–pagetitle:Kick-Ass 3 #1–>

Mark Millar continues to lecture us about how superheroes are not real and how superheroes in real life would be losers. If you liked the first two, nothing appears to have changed.

<!–pagetitle:Baltimore: The Infernal Train #1–>

Lord Baltimore returns in a pretty solid little horror book. Building on some previous one-shots, Mike Mignola’s story is pretty much what you’d expect, but the pacing keeps it fresh and Ben Stenbeck’s art is well suited to the story. Fan or not, it’s a very easy book to get into, and if you like horror, this’ll be a good pick.

<!–pagetitle:Danger Girl: The Chase #1–>

Like most Danger Girl books, this is pretty much exactly what the cover says it is. Certainly nothing terrible, but it’s not breaking new ground and is mostly for fans of either the franchise or women in somewhat skimpy outfits punching each other.

<!–pagetitle:Trillium #2–>

Jeff Lemire’s love story actually stops and takes a breath. It shows two people, unable to speak, falling in love, and it really works. Not to mention the sudden spike in the stakes in fairly short order. Definitely pick this up; it’s probably the best book DC has put out this week.

<!–pagetitle:Infinity #2–>

Jonathan Hickman gets surprisingly Biblical with this second issue of Infinity. But also impressive is how he keeps this sprawling space opera rolling with nary a loose plot thread. This is a fun, tight, engaging story, Marvel at its best, and highly recommended.

James Asmus’ take on this duo gets more hilarious, and ridiculous, by the issue. For some it may teeter on the edge of campy with this issue, but Tom Fowler does a good job of delivering utterly crazy ideas while simultaneously keeping the art just grounded enough to keep it funny. Probably the funniest book hitting the stands this week, and well worth picking up.

Joe Casey’s hilarious, winking, ’70s Marvel style mixes with three great artists for a book that’s simultaneously nostalgic and satiric. I do wish Casey would maybe shift out of the purple mode a little bit, but it’s a fun book nonetheless, and easy to pick up.

<!–pagetitle:G.I. Joe: The Cobra Files #6–>

Mike Costa continues to deliver an understated, adult, and intelligent look at the G.I. Joe team. This issue, focusing on the leader of the Cobra Files team, is actually a pretty sad look at a man who puts self-sacrifice first and himself second… even when it means he’s throwing his career under the bus. Highly recommended, especially if you’re looking to pick up this series.

The Victories #5: Michael Avon Oeming ends this arc on a cliffhanger, but this book has found its feet and promises to just get better with its next arc.

Shadowman #10: Justin Jordan goes out with a bang on this book, revealing just how the Shadowman got his powers. Well worth reading, and a nice twist on the standard origin.
