Six Songs Are Ready For The ‘Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog’ Sequel

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Three of the four creators of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog — Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen — are now making Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (What happened, Zack Whedon?) The Hollywood Reporter interviewed the Jed and Maurissa about the new show, but we’re totally going to ignore it for a shred of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog sequel news.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog was written during the during the 2007–2008 Writers Guild of America strike to make something on a low budget that wouldn’t run afoul of the Writers Guild. The 14 songs went on to turn a $3 million profit with iTunes sales, paying back the cast and crew (who worked for free). There’s been talk of a sequel for a long time.

There was some hope of that happening as recently as last year, when, in the lead up to the release of The Avengers, Joss Whedon made the soon to be proved very wrong assumption that in the lull after its release he might have some time to sit down and focus on a Horribles equel in the summer of 2012. That was, however, before The Avengers became the third-highest grossing movie in history and Marvel Entertainment offered Whedon and his crew a chance at creating a S.H.I.E.L.D. television show. Not to mention that it was before Whedon accepted director/writer duties on Avengers: Age of Ultron as well. [The Mary Sue]

It doesn’t sound promising for Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog 2, and yet we found out in The Hollywood Reporter‘s interview that six new songs are already written.

We have to ask: Where are you guys with the Dr. Horrible sequel?
Maurissa Tancharoen: We wish we could be doing everything at the same time, but it’s always something that is in our hearts and always something we desperately want to do. But now Joss is away. He’s in London prepping, and we are here everyday consumed by this. But there are about six songs ready to go.
Jed Whedon: In some form or another, it will exist. Obviously we’ve been saying that for a long time and it’s been slow going. But we never forget. It lives in our hearts.
Tancharoen: I will play Groupie #1 before you can call it Old Hag #1 (laughs).

Oh man, we hope Joss Whedon finds some free time to get airlifted in and really hammer it home. The hammer is, well, you know.
