‘Afterlife With Archie #1’ And Other Comics Of Note, October 9th

Yes, Riverdale is getting overrun with zombies, and believe it or not? It’s actually a tight, effective horror story. A review, and a look at books from DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, IDW, and Valiant under the jump.

First of all, Afterlife With Archie is 100% serious. For those not following Archie, it’s of a piece with the more serious books that the company has been putting out recently, which you might remember annoyed fundamentalists for letting Kevin Keller get married.

And they’re not screwing around with the talent, either. The artist is none other than Francesco Francavilla, who’s been working on his own books at Dark Horse and has filled in on a few Hawkeye issues recently, and is probably one of the most talented artists currently putting out work in comics. And the script is by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who wrote the upcoming Carrie remake and has an extensive comics history as well.

And honestly, it really works well. Aguirre-Sacasa’s script is sad and funny in equal measure; dog owners especially are going to feel a real stab to heart in just the first few pages. But Aguirre-Sacasa knows his way around these characters and can write them seriously and realistically while keeping what makes them, well, Archie and his pals.

Francavilla, meanwhile, you can feel chuckling as he sketches the panels. He’s not working in the Dan DeCarlo mode, obviously; that wouldn’t suit the tone of the book. But he gets vivid and funny work in with every panel; the Halloween costumes especially make for some funny sight gags.

In short, it’s not just another zombie book; it’s a clever one that makes use of the universe it’s set in. It’s a must-read this week… but what about the rest of the books on the stands?

<!–pagetitle:Death Sentence #1–>

The idea of suddenly getting superpowers and it setting the stage to kill you isn’t really a new one, but Montynero and Mike Dowling have some fun with a hacky musician, a riot grrl, and Russell Brand all getting a “G+ virus” and discovering that being killed by superpowers does have its upsides. It’s a pretty fun book, although it does suffer from being a bit cheaply cynical. One hopes as the series goes on it’ll have a little more fun with the idea and less with commenting on character types.

<!–pagetitle:Three #1–>

Kieron Gillen explains his motives behind this book in an afterword, but it can really be summed up in four words: The Spartans were monsters. And Gillen isn’t shy about showing just what monsters they were. Frat bros are sure to be offended, but beyond that, it makes for an interesting, if dark story, helped by Ryan Kelly’s art, simultaneously detailed and grounded.

<!–pagetitle:Rocket Girl #1–>

A teenaged timecop in a jetpack goes back to 1986 NYC to fight crime. Yeah, this’ll end well. Amy Reeder’s art is the real star here, but Brandon Montclare does deliver a script that’s at least somewhat of interest, and it’s fast-paced and funny enough to get attention. Worth reading if you’re a fan of the creative team.

<!–pagetitle:Coffin Hill #1–>

Caitlin Kittredge and Inaki Miranda start up their horror book about a cursed New England family. Honestly, this opening issue is mostly backstory establishing that Eve Coffin is something of a mess and that unsurprisingly her ancestral manse, smack in the middle of Lovecraft country, is not a fun place to be. And Eve Coffin, honestly, is so far a bit flat as a character, albeit this is only the first issue; Kittredge, being a novelist, is pacing this a bit like a novel. Still, Miranda’s art is well-suited to the script, and it’s got some promise; keep an eye on it if you’re a horror fan.

<!–pagetitle:Superman/Wonder Woman #1–>

This book has been a bit controversial, to say the least, but Charles Soule and Tony Daniel deliver a fairly solid first issue. Soule especially deserves credit because he emphasizes Supes and Wondy not just as a couple but as a team; they’ve got strengths and weaknesses, and this is very much a superhero book. I don’t think it’ll lay any fears about the book to rest just yet, but it’s a pretty good start and worth checking out.

<!–pagetitle:Forever Evil: Arkham War #1–>

Peter Tomasi mostly has to spend this issue setting up that this will be a massive war between Batman villains, and also that Professor Pyg is still nasty. On the other hand, this is going to be a massive supervillain fight, with Bane serving as the main one in the rumble, and it’s hard to complain too much as a result.

<!–pagetitle:The Shaolin Cowboy #1–>

Yep, Geoff Darrow’s Buddhist warrior is back! The political “satire” is a little dated, since Cheney jokes stopped being relevant around 2008, and the satire of social media doesn’t really work either, but most of the book is gloriously silent: Just a man, two chainsaws strapped to a bamboo pole, and a swarm of zombies. If that doesn’t make this a must-buy, I don’t know what will.

<!–pagetitle:Triple Helix #1–>

John Byrne keeps up this whole “knocking off Marvel heroes” thing, and he’s gonna get IDW sued. Anyway, Triple Helix builds off of Trio, adding an off-brand X-Men to the off-brand Fantastic Four. And once again it feels like literally nothing has changed in comics since 1988 to Byrne. Fun for fans of his work but nothing original, to put it mildly.

<!–pagetitle:The Memory Collectors #1–>

Menton3 hands in a book about goth chicks in platform heels stabbing monsters. If that’s your thing, enjoy; the art’s quite pretty, although the writing is almost absurdly pretentious. But everyone else can skip this one.

<!–pagetitle:Magic The Gathering: Theros #1–>

Don’t be put off by the license: This is a pretty straightforward fantasy book that anybody can pick up and read. That said, following the adventures of a thief across fantasy lands is fairly straightforward, and Jason Ciaramella mostly makes it work by being funny. And Martin Coccolo has some charming art to go with the script, so if you want a high fantasy book, this is one to pick up.

<!–pagetitle:Cryptozoic Man #1–>

Steve Dave and Walt from Kevin Smith’s movies file the serial numbers of Animal-Mineral-Vegetable Man and give him his own series. Walter Flanagan’s art has a nice Topps trading card sense to it, but Bryan Johnson’s script doesn’t make a lick of sense, something about alternate universes and cryptids and… something. There’s also a dude in a pink suit and a pig gimp mask. I’ll give it this, it’s like nothing else on the stands this week, anyway.

<!–pagetitle:Wonderland: Through The Looking Glass #1–>

If you were hoping that maybe you could get into Zenescope’s books, don’t bother. This is pretty much completely impenetrable unless you’ve read the accompanying miniseries. So, if you’ve been following this series, here’s more, but if you’re looking to start reading, look elsewhere.

<!–pagetitle:Elfquest: The Final Quest–>

Wendy and Richard Pini finally get to bring Elfquest fans some closure. If I’m being honest, I was never a huge fan of the Elfquest books, and this isn’t going to make you a fan, nor is it really aimed at bringing new readers on board. But fans have been looking for a wrapup for years, so it’s nice to see them get some closure.

<!–pagetitle:Eternal Warrior #2–>

Greg Pak continues to write the Conan book he never got a chance to write, and it’s wonderful. A nice touch is that our hero, despite being, well, Conan, does actually have a limit, something this issue explores. The art alternates between Trevor Hairsine and Clayton Crain, and both are admirably up to the task of showing off fluid action. In short, it’s another hit from Valiant.

<!–pagetitle:Resident Alien #2–>

Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse’s mix of aliens and noir continues to be a spare, effective story. This is a three issue mini, so pick up the first two; it’s a low-key, well-rendered book that deserves a wider audience.

<!–pagetitle:It Came! #3–>

Or, “Carry On B-Movie.” Dan Boultwood’s parody of crappy English B-movies is, perhaps, a bit thin as a concept to carry a four issue miniseries. On the other hand, it’s a B-movie parody full of sex jokes (as if the title wasn’t a huge hint), so if you need cheap laughs, this has plenty on offer.

<!–pagetitle:Halo: Initiation #3–>

This miniseries wraps up with a fun, if conventional, string of action sequences. More for Halo fans than anyone else, but a solid and fun little series.

<!–pagetitle:Infinity #4–>

Jonathan Hickman continues to juggle a massive, space-spanning war with Thanos trying to settle some family business on Earth, and he just keeps upping the stakes. This is really what one wants out of a massive event like this, and if you’re not follwoing it, you’re missing out.

<!–pagetitle:Chronos Commandos #4–>

Stuart Bennett continues to match great art with a fairly standard pulp story about Nazis, dinosaurs, and time travel. It’s not boring, but it does feel pretty familiar. Best way of putting it: The cover tells you exactly what kind of book you’ll be getting.

<!–pagetitle:Abe Sapien #6–>

This issue is mostly concerned with Abe’s emotional journey, but it also touches on Mayan mythology and immigration for an interesting issue, and Sebastián Fiumara’s art is always a pleasure. Worth picking up, especially as it’s the start of a two-part arc.

<!–pagetitle:X #6–>

I’m still on the fence about Duane Swierczynski’s take on X. The opening four issues were pretty weak, but the last issue was a pretty humorous bit of black comedy and this issue is more of a noir told from multiple perspectives. Also, Nguyen’s art this issue has an odd Sam Kieth feel to it. Still, it’s starting to feel a bit more like a book with a plan instead of a lost ’90s arc, and that’s a good thing.

<!–pagetitle:Star Wars #10–>

Brian Wood continues to explore the emotional component of the Star Wars universe. In particular, seeing Wedge mourn a lost lover is a surprisingly emotional thing to read. Not that this book isn’t full of action, either, and it ends on a killer cliffhanger. If you’re not reading it now, pick it up; it’s consistently one of the best books on the stand, period.

<!–pagetitle:Creepy #14–>

This is worth the four bucks for the Matthew Southworth story, Blind Contour, that anchors this issue. Southworth’s slice of character gets pretty deep under your skin, and it’ll stick with you for a while. The rest of the issue is fairly standard for Creepy, but this is an absolute standout.

<!–pagetitle:Archer And Armstrong #14–>

Just when you think this book can’t get more funny or absurd, Fred Van Lente tops himself. This issue kicks off a massive crossover between the various insane secret conspiracies that have been fighting each other ever since this book got started, and along the way, Van Lente finds the time to parody The Punisher. If you’re not reading this book, now is the time to jump on board.

<!–pagetitle:Green Lantern Corps #24–>

Lights Out continues from Green Lantern #24 pretty much directly, and it continues to be, well, a crossover. It’s definitely interesting; Relic pretty much completely stomps the Corps. But it’s more for GL fans than new readers, so take that into account.
