Did ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Swipe Art From A Video Game?

Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Mass Effect probably have a lot of overlap in their fanbases. That makes an alleged theft all the more surprising.

It happens in a long shot in the midseason finale, right before we see Mike Peterson doing football drills with a bulldozer. Here’s a side by side comparison of the two, cut down to focus on the problem first reported on by Eurogamer:

True, it could simply be a riff on the same structure, but that seems a bit of a stretch. Here are the two images overlaid to contrast what was changed.

It’s not a complete one-to-one match, as you can see: The spires have been removed and the structural elements of the image have been moved around a little bit, although a different screencap would likely also lead to a closer match between the two pieces. But there are a lot of similarities here, more than can really be chalked up to a coincidence. Neither EA nor Disney has replied to any request for comment, presumably because they’ve both summoned their pet litigators to the Doom Chamber to work out just how much they can win/lose in court.

Either way, somebody’s probably getting fired. And eventually, production companies will stop trying to get one past the Internet.
