It's a light week for comics, this week, but we've still got plenty to read. Here's a look at comics from DC, Marvel, Image, and Dark Horse on the stands today. We've also got an interview with Jean-Marc Rochette, the artist on Snowpiercer, which is seeing its first volume out today.

snowpiercer_vol_1_the_escape_cover

Snowpiercer is a French comic, adapted into a Korean movie with English actors, that is finally getting an official release today. Titan's volume is their usual gorgeous book, and it's well worth buying. We caught up with Rochette and asked him a few questions about the book, the art, and seeing it translated to the screen.

Class issues are obviously first and foremost in the book. How did you emphasize that as an artist?

Snowpiercer is maybe one of the most political graphic novels ever created, but, strangely, neither Lob nor me were very political. We were more interested in ecology than social inequality. I don't remember any discussion about this topic between us. But Lob came from a very simple Parisian family, and he was raised by a single mother during wartime, so I guess he knew about poverty. As for me, I come from a very poor family of farmers from Ardèche, so I also grew up among the tales of hunger.

Were there any research challenges? A train one thousand and one cars long seems intimidating!

To start with, Lob asked me to figure out the shape of the train. He knew that the story needed an awesome train, and curiously I don't remember that I had any difficulties to design the train. I could see it in my mind—its two eyes, and its blank stare like a Spartan helmet.

How did the movie first come together? Were you involved, or did you just hear about it?

The first time I heard about the possibility that Snowpiercer could become a Korean movie was in 2006. I was very surprised, since our books hadn’t been translated into Korean, so how did a Korean filmmaker find a copy of Snowpiercer, in French? It was a mystery, but in fact there was an unauthorized Korean book… Later I finally discovered that the Korean publisher was honest, and my French editor a little bit lazy... In all it was a real fairly tale for a comics artist...

What are some of the differences between film and comics for you as an artist?

There are many differences: the pace, movement, the audio of course, etc.... but the biggest difference for me is that comics is mostly about the art, as there is certain poetry hidden in the drawings, a distance from the reality, a static movement. There is also a sense beauty in the composition of the pages. A comics is neither a novel, nor a film—it’s a very strange art form. I come from Ardèche, and not far from my home, there is the oldest decorated cave, about 40 000 years old, the Chauvet cave. And now I do almost the same thing as they did in that cave. And I hope that in 40 000 years time there will be always some artists to do this kind of job... art!

What's next for you?

I am working on the sequel of Snowpiercer, and I am finishing working on an exhibition of abstract lanscapes for the museum of Meudon in September 2014.

Huntress and Power Girl, still Earth 2's Robin and Supergirl, go on separate adventures, both of which will define what they are as heroes later on. Paul Levitz, Diogenes Neves, and Marc Deerining deliver a solid book, but it's really for those who've been reading this from the start and those looking for an entry into the series.

Marvel's revival of their UK heroes continues courtesy of Rob Williams and Simon Coleby. This go-round, it's the Knight of Pendragon, a superteam you might remember from the '80s. This book is an entertainingly goofy rip on both nationalism and silly trends, and entertaining enough that it's worth a look for fans of superheroes and comedy.

Bryan Glass and Victor Santos debut a new superheroine... namely, a tabloid brat with a disturbingly troubled past and some pretty serious anger issues as a result. She's trying to get over her past and do the right thing for a change... but when you're an emotional mess, sometimes things go wrong. It's a pretty fascinating spin on a seemingly old idea, and worth picking up. Highly recommended.

Zack Whedon, Georges Jeanty, and Karl Story start up the next chapter of Serenity, and, honestly, it feels a bit more low-key than it should be. This is partially because the entire cast is lying low; in the wake of the finale of Serenity, hiding is the safest course of action. Needless to say, though, it becomes more difficult than it should be. It's fun for fans, although the dialogue feels a bit forced, and the closest we'll get to season two of Firefly. Thus, worth picking up.

You know, if the costume designs for this series weren't so utterly ridiculous, it'd actually be a decent take on the Oz mythology. Joe Brusha and Jeff Massey do all right with the material, and bother to write something interesting instead of letting the fetish outfits carry the material. Still probably not a book for anyone other than Zenescope's fan base, but it's nice to see somebody actually writing these comics.

This issue from Toby Litt and Mark Buckingham emphasizes the ties between Dead Boy Detectives and Sandman, and, honestly, it holds the book back a little bit. Litt has written a fairly interesting mystery story in of itself that's surprisingly lighthearted for the content, and frankly, the book doesn't really need the ties to Vertigo's past to work on its own. Worth reading, especially for mystery fans.

Dick Grayson recalls, yet again, his first mission with Batman. Peter Tomasi and Doug Mahnke always deliver a comic worth reading, but this is something of an idea we've seen before, and it needs a compelling villain to keep it fresh. Tusk decidedly does not fit that bill. Fun for Bat-fans, but nothing casual readers need to spend $5 on.

Tom Taylor takes his version of Batman in an... unexpected direction. Robson Rocha and Scott Hanna do their usual excellent job on the art, but this is interesting mostly because, for once, you don't see the twist coming. It's a great reveal for Earth 2 fans, and if you've been following the ongoing, a must-read.

Robert Venditti and Van Jensen get together and turn out a book that's pretty much a love letter to all the Green Lantern villains over the years. As such, this is really more for fans and completists than anyone else, and the twist is something you'll see coming a mile away, but it's a fun read and it sets up the coming arc for the next Green Lantern plotline. Pick it up if you're a GL fan, or just like villains in general.

Matt Fraction and Nick Bradshaw follow up on the events of Infinity with Medusa taking command of her people. It's a surprisingly engaging book in some ways, with Fraction drawing Medusa sharply as both a leader and a person. If you're new to the Inhumans, this is actually a fairly good introduction to the character, and worth reading if you're following Marvel's ongoing events.

James Robinson and J. Bone's story of alien invasion and control follows up a smart first issue with an intriguing second. The saviors of the title are not our stoner hero and his paranoid new friend... it's the aliens who are trying to save humanity. But it's not clear how, and the price might be too high. Bone's art and Robinson's script are ideally suited, and it's probably the best book on the stands this week. Highly recommended.

black-science-03

Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera's story of dimension-hopping and a total lack of scientific ethics continues, and keeps getting better. Our "hero", we learn in this issue, is an even bigger tool than we thought, and the characters keep getting more complex and interesting. Oh, and they also fight a giant Native American robot. Pulpy without being purple, complex without being dense, this is a great read. Highly recommended.

Adam Knave and D.J. Kirkbride wrap up their miniseries. First of all, I'm glad to report Robert Love got an inker, Felix Perez and thus the art here is a substantial step up that does Love's pencils credit. The book itself ends on an oddly hopeful note: Chuck may have lost his powers, but "never-ending" isn't just a Superman reference. An interesting take on superheroes and worth picking up.

Mike Mignol and John Arcudi have fun with robots fighting Nazis, but it's Laurence Campbell who's the star here. This series has been a lot of fun, and has a strong sense of style and place. If you love B.P.R.D., pick this book up.

Fred Van Lente and Ariel Olivetti end their somewhat light-hearted take on Conan. There are some technical slipups here and there, noticably Olivetti just leaving in reference photos as backgrounds, but the book itself is a fun goof on Conan, and worth reading for fans of the iron-thewed Cimmerian.

five-weapons-06-a

Jimmie Robertson's Five Weapons was a delight when it first arrived last year, a series about a "servant" in a school for assassins, Enrique, hiding undercover and using his brain, not his fists, to defeat his opponents. It's was a witty, funny series, and everything that made it great is back in this newly launched ongoing. Pick this up; Robertson's deft, witty script and fresh-faced art are wonderful. Highly recommended.

The Flash uncovers what he thinks might be a key lead in solving who actually killed his mom. One problem, though: The serial killer in question is a lot less human than Barry thinks. Brian Buccellato and Patrick Zircher's issue is a fun read mostly for the small details: Tar Pit and Chroma arguing, Barry uncovering more about his mother, and the ending splash panel. If you've been looking to get into the book, this is a good place to start.

AQUAMAN_27

Most of this book is Aquaman fighting a giant monster, and thus, I find it really hard to complain, because I love superheroes fighting giant monsters, and this is fairly well done, especially on the part of Paul Pelletier and Netho Diaz. Jeff Parker also does a good job of exploring surface-dweller and ocean-dweller tensions, even as Arthur has to navigate through each. This will be a fun issue for Aquaman fans, although it might not have much for casual readers.
