Some promising news is coming out of Marvel for both the hit or miss Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man. With big releases on the horizon in the coming months, it would seem that Marvel is trying to tighten their properties and keep everything moving smoothly.
We have to start with S.H.I.E.L.D. though because it is the most in need of some help and this is probably the more spoiler heavy of the news. There was a hint of good things to come with a confirmed storyline featuring Jamie Alexander as Lady Sif from Thor, but now it seems there is even more on the schedule. From Deadline:
The Marvel Comics character Deathlok will appear on ABC‘s Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. beginning next month, Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb said today during the show’s TCA set visit presentation. The character Mike Peterson, played by J August Richards on the series, will become the cyborg. “We’ve been leaving breadcrumbs along the way,” Loeb said. “This is a major Marvel character appearing on TV, on film for the first time.” Earlier in the presentation, Loeb showed footage of Bill Paxton on the series; he is joining for “several episodes” playing Agent John Garret…Also coming aboard is the character of Lorelei (played by Elene Satine), a villain from Thor’s home of Asgard.
Makes a lot of sense to bring Deathlok in at this point, though I would hardly call him or anyone on the show a major Marvel character. He’s probably one of the more visible characters to be mentioned for appearance and I do like that they are tying in the Mike Peterson storyline. As for Lady Sif, it’s nice to see that she’ll have something other than talk to random Asgardians on Earth during her story arc.
The Edgar Wright-directed actioner is creeping forward to take Batman vs. Superman‘s old July 17 slot, which falls two weeks before its previously planned July 31 date…Ant-Man will now duke it out at the box office with Joe Wright’s Peter Pan origin tale Pan. Warner Bros. had moved the picture from June to July to take the spot vacated by Batman vs. Superman.
If you would’ve asked me to get excited for an Ant-Man movie back when it was announced, I would’ve spit directly in your eye like Bocephus. Even with Edgar Wright involved, I couldn’t have cared less about the character.
Now though, I’m a little interested in seeing what will happen. It’s the beginning of Marvel’s phase 3 films and the casting choices are spot on so far. Moving it up in the summer is also a good sign.
