After the awful news yesterday that Philip Seymour Hoffman has died as a result of his substance abuse problem, one of the inevitable (and somewhat unseemly) questions people raise is about what happens to the movies he was working on. Is there more of his impressive work that we haven’t seen yet?
Lionsgate — who hired Philip Seymour Hoffman to play Gamemaker-turned-resistance-fighter Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and upcoming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One and Part Two — have released a short statement about his passing. Deadline follows up the statement with more specifics on Hoffman’s scenes.
We’re hearing Hoffman had completed the majority of his work on Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Parts 1 & 2 prior to his sudden death Sunday morning. He had seven days of filming to go before wrapping Mockingjay Part 2, but there’s no word yet on what Lionsgate plans to do to make up for that remaining week Hoffman was supposed to film.
Two words: Andy Serkis.
Anyway, it may seem shortsighted to the point of stupidity to ask, “What about The Hunger Games?” when an actor of Hoffman’s caliber dies so needlessly, but we’ll take any Philip Seymour Hoffman movies we can get. Even Twister. (Especially Twister.)
