‘The Order: 1886′ Dumps Multiplayer Entirely

At this point, a multiplayer mode is viewed as more or less a necessity for most games, certainly most FPS games. And to be fair, a well-done multiplayer mode can be a fun game in of itself, even if most of the time it has little to do with the actual game. But The Order: 1886 is just going to skip over all that in favor of making, you know, a great single-player experience.

Developed by Ready at Dawn, responsible for the two portable God Of War games, you might remember The Order: 1886 as that weird Victorian shooter. If not, here’s the reveal trailer!

If you were looking forward to blasting your friend, Ready at Dawn co-founder Andrea Pessino has some bad news for you, according to his Twitter account:

Why, precisely, are they skipping tradition?

Needless to say, some on the Internet are a bit upset about it, but we actually find this refreshing. Most games, recently, have had to farm out their multiplayer development just to make the deadline: Batman: Arkham Origins had a great multiplayer mode, but it wasn’t developed by WB Games Montreal. Instead, developer Splash Damage was hired on. Furthermore, it appears that The Order: 1886 has been in development for nearly four years at this point, and it’s arriving in the third quarter of 2014. It’s a little late to be tacking on new modes.

Either way, it’s just nice to know that the single player isn’t a thin excuse to put out a multiplayer game. Now the question, of course, is… how good is that single-player? We’ll find out later this year.
