Comics Of Note, April 2nd

It’s a fairly busy week on the stands this week. Here’s a look at the major comics from DC, Marvel, Image, Dark Horse, IDW Publishing, Valiant, Boom! Studios, Dynamite, and Avatar Press.

Aquaman and The Others #1

Aquaman is forced to team back up with the holders of the various Atlantean objects of power to figure out who’s sending ninjas after them. Honestly, with Dan Jurgens on the script and Lan Medina and Allen Martinez clearly being guided by him on the layouts, you’d be forgiven for thinking this was a ’90s reprint. But it’s entertaining and fairly efficient, and thus, for Aquaman fans, worth a read.

Inhuman #1

Marvel’s taste for mutants, er, Inhumans gets an ongoing of its very own from Charles Soule and Joe Madureira. Anything from Soule is always worth reading, and his dialogue in particular ranges from earthly and real to amusingly overblown and pompous depending on the character. Madureira, though, doesn’t feel like a good fit for this book. His elaborate, over-the-top style feels a bit too loose and dated for the book. Still a good read, it must be said, and worth it for Marvel fans.

Carnage Vs. Deadpool #1

This is the kind of book where the title will pretty much sell you on it or not. Suffice to say Cullen Bunn and Salvador Espin deliver precisely what you expect, and it’s gleeful in how ridiculous it is.

Shotgun Wedding #1

Breaking up is hard to do. When you’re both assassins and one of you has severe rage issues… well, it gets messier. William Harms isn’t exactly changing espionage books with this, but his sense of action and tone make the book a fairly zippy one. Albert Pun’s clean, clear art help considerably; the action sequences are a lot of fun. Worth reading for action fans.’

The Field #1

The first of two books this week about a guy waking up somewhere with no memory, The Field is a much darker and funnier story from Ed Brisson. Simon Roy helps quite a bit by generating an air of unease as our amnesiac hero realizes his “benefactor” is anything but. A queasy, engaging book, and highly recommended.

’68: Rule of War #1

Yep, the “zombies in ‘Nam” series is back. Honestly, if you’re a fan, this will be great, but for the rest of us, there’s really nothing in Mark Kidwell’s script that’s attention-getting. Albeit Jeff Zornow can really draw a rotting zombie, and for some that’ll be enough.

Angel and Faith: Season Ten #1

Victor Gischler steps away from his film-pitch books to take on the Buffyverse. I freely admit I’ve been pretty hard on Gischler in this column, but to be honest, he’s quite a good fit here. Will Conrad’s art is solid, and overall, it’s a good story. Worth picking up for Buffy fans.

Dead Letters #1

Sam wakes up in a seedy motel room, with no memories, and the phone starts ringing. It’s a fairly standard setup, but Christopher Sebela’s script pretty much packs the book with so much action you won’t notice. Chris Visions, handling art, actually cleverly pays off this books ultimate idea quite well; you’ll start noticing something’s off, start asking questions, but only until the final panel are your suspicions confirmed. It’s a promising start, and we’re looking forward to what comes next.

Caliban #1

Or Garth Ennis’ Event Horizon. Not that that’s a bad thing. This first issue is mostly just getting the pieces on the board, but it’s got some promise, and Facundo Percio’s art is a nice, detailed collection of pages. Worth a read for SF/horror fans.

The Premature Burial

Richard Corben returns to his Poe adaptations in a one-shot from Dark Horse. The title story is actually a bit better suited to Corben’s black humor than his expansion of The Cask of Amontillado, but it’s still a fun little dose for nastiness for those interested.

Magneto #2

Magneto begins tracking down the Omega Sentinels, and finds himself in a place that’s a little too familiar. Cullen Bunn actually does quite a good job of making this book a noirish piece of work, helped substantially by Gabriel Hernandez Walta’s artwork. A surprising book from Marvel, and highly recommended.

Moon Knight #2

Warren Ellis and Declan Shalvey deliver a taut, suspenseful one-off book that serves as much as an announcement for what they’ll do with Moon Knight as a way to show off how creative they are. And that’s all we’ll say, for fear of spoilers. Highly recommended.

Starlight #2

Honestly, this issue is a bit slower-paced than the debut, but it’s still an amusing concept: Flash Gordon being dragged out of retirement and back to the planet he saved. Mark Millar shows unusual warmth and restraint, and Goran Parlov does quite a good job with the pulp style while not letting the book feel stale. All in all, a good followup.

Veil #2

The first issue of Veil was a tantalizing mix of unanswered questions and effective horror. The follow-up by Greg Rucka and Toni Fezjula answers just a few of those questions, or rather provides just enough of an answer to keep up reading. This is some smart, well-paced, and effective horror comics, and highly recommended.

Monster And Madman #2

Frankenstein’s monster escapes the Arctic and stumbles into something much, much worse. Damien Worm’s art for this book is a bit tighter than the last issue, much more solidly done and moody, albeit the dark color palette can sometimes make the book a little too hard to read. But while Steve Niles’ script is OK, it feels a bit padded. Why did this need three issues? Why not two? Interesting for horror and Victoriana fans.

Rogue Trooper #2

This revival of 2000 AD’s SF character had a pretty strong first issue. Brian Ruckley writes a fairly solid war book, even with all the SF trappings, and Alberto Ponticelli does quite well with the action. It’s a solid, fun, and occasionally smart-assed war book, and if that’s your jam, this is your book.

She-Hulk #3

So if Doctor Doom’s son wants political asylum in the US, who does he call for a lawyer? You get one guess. Charles Soule’s book has rapidly become the light and fluffy stuff that suits Shulkie best, and his legal background makes for a truly hilarious script. Javier Pulido’s sensibilities are also well-suited to the whimsical style on display here. In short, highly recommended.

Lobster Johnson: Get The Lobster! #3

Lobster Johnson is always a fun, pulpy time, and Mike Mignola’s tendency to use Hellboy to showcase artists is a good one in the case of Tonci Zonjic. It’s a fun little throwback, and better than a lot of the books actually based on pulp characters. If you’re looking for a two-fisted action book, it doesn’t get better.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter #3

This take on the Gold Key property was already a rock-solid book with its first issue. But the third has both emphasized the themes and amped up the action. There’s a lot going on here, on a lot of levels, in Greg Pak’s script, and Mirko Colak’s art continues to be clean, crisp, and well-suited to the book. Highly recommended.

Bad Blood #4

This miniseries has been a fairly clever spin on the typical vampire story, and let’s just say Jonathan Mayberry and Tyler Crook are full of surprises. Highly recommended; if you haven’t picked up the whole arc, now’s the time to start.

Juice Squeezers #4

David Lapham wraps his rather adorable kid’s action book up with a mystery or two. This has been a consistently fun action book for kids; get them the whole arc if they’re looking for some good comics.

Terminator: Salvation: The Final Battle #5

This book has finally come into focus a bit, and I owe an apology to J. Michael Straczynski; this issue in particular makes it clear he’s dancing to someone else’s tune. Essentially this is a mix of tying Terminator: Salvation to the rest of the franchise and an actual plot Straczynski was allowed to write. It’s improving from the weaker earlier issues, but this is still something of a pale imitation next to Dan Jolley’s concurrent ongoing.

Grindhouse: Doors Open At Midnight #7

This book kicks off its next arc of two-parters, Flesh Feast of the Devil Doll, with Gary Erskine taking over art chores for this round. This is, so far, probably the best issue of the series, with fairly clever monster design, and the exploitation aspects of the book not feeling too forced, aside from the scene with girls throwing pies at each other while topless. Erskine is particularly well suited to the script and style of the book, and if you don’t mind being pandered to, it’s worth picking up.

Quantum And Woody #9

The World’s Worst Superhero Team kicks off a new arc, with Kano on the art chores. Eric tries to make Woody a responsible adult and it… well, suffice to say Woody being Woody things do not go the way he hoped. Fortunately, Eric’s misery is our comedy, and this book ends with a superbly funny payoff that promises to make this a great arc. Highly recommended.

Suicide Risk #12

Our hero has become… well, suffice to say, not a hero. And he’s not happy. Know who’s even less happy? The daughter he has that can kick his ass. But things are a lot more complex, and a lot nastier, that anyone realizes. Mike Carey and Elena Casagrande have turned this book on its head from a simple concept, and it’s become an extremely fun ride.

Archer And Armstrong #19

You don’t really expect a serious exploration of faith from a goofy buddy-comedy comic book about conspiracy theories, but hell, that’s Fred Van Lente for you. Lest you think Pere Perez is left with nothing to do, this book is packed with often very funny action sequences, and an opening panel that’s no less funny for being exactly what you expect. Highly recommended.

Detective Comics #30

You know a good way to piss off Batman? Pick a fight with him at his house. At least that’s what Brian Buccellato and Francis Manapul believe, and this book ends with a rather dramatic demonstration of a local organized crime figure doing just that. This new arc is a great jumping-on point. It’s funny, action-packed, and even a little disturbing. Highly recommended.

Ultimate Spider-Man #200

Brian Michael Bendis writes a what-if issue, of sorts. But it’s kind of a sad book, and it explores what Peter Parker meant to the people around him. If you’ve been following Ultimate Spidey, it’ll be an issue you won’t want to miss.
